Cyberpunk 2077 Developer Explains Launch Issues While Promising Improvements

Cyberpunk 2077 Character

While Cyberpunk 2077 enjoyed a great deal of hype before release, after launch, the game experienced criticism and disappointment from across the internet. Players and reviewers dealt with a great deal of bugs and glitches, in some cases making the game unplayable, especially on the last generation versions of the game.

In response, Playstation pulled the game from its store, a lawsuit has been filed against the studio, and refunds have been made available across platforms and retailers.

In the aftermath of this poor public reception, the studio has issued an official apology. However, many have wondered what went wrong with the game and where it will go from here.

NEWS

CD Projekt Red has come out with a new message for players, emphasizing the studio's "commitment to quality" and intent to fix many of the issues found in the game. In a five-minute video, co-founder Marcin Iwiński apologizes for the final quality of the game, talks about how the game came to exist in this state, and discusses the future plans the studio has.

The full video can be seen below.

This announcement also features a roadmap for future updates, as well as a detailed FAQ for any other questions players may have. Reiterating some of the points from the video, the FAQ touches on questions of last-gen quality gaps, explaining that the studio prioritized making "the game look epic on PCs and then adjusting it to consoles — especially old-gens."

This section also addresses controversies related to review copies, explaining that the decision to initially only provide reviewers with PC versions of the game stemmed from the fact that the studio was still "working hard to improve the quality of the game on old-gen consoles."

WHAT THIS MEANS

While it is no surprise to hear that CD Projekt Red plans to continue fixing and refining Cyberpunk 2077, it is certainly good to hear more from them on the game's current state. Confirming what many suspected, Iwiński cites the scope of the game and the abnormal conditions resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic as key factors in the game's buggy condition at launch.

As for the future of the game, this announcement pushes back the already-announced free DLC packs and next-gen update. This likely means that any announcements related to these developments will also be delayed, with the FAQ stating that the studio will have "more to say about that in the coming months."

While fans can expect the game to improve in stability and quality in the near future, content drops and information surrounding them may be a little further out.

As the game continues to improve in quality, it may also see a rerelease on the PlayStation store, though no information about such a development has yet been publicized.
