Star Wars Video Games Enter New Era With Lucasfilm Games Announcement
It's no secret that Star Wars is a transmedia franchise, using various forms to tell a compelling story to the audience. A huge chunk of the narrative comes from the movies, but it seems that the small screen's dominance is fast approaching, thanks to the success of The Mandalorian.
However, before the popularity of Disney+, Star Wars used video games as a medium to craft interesting narratives to further expand the franchise's lore. Games like Battlefront II and Jedi: Fallen Order propelled the franchise to greater heights, ultimately establishing their place in the gaming landscape.
Right now, Star Wars is in the midst of embracing the next chapter of its interconnected storytelling. A plethora of projects for Disney+ and the movie branch was announced during Disney Investor Day, ushering in a new era for the franchise.
Now, it looks like the video game branch of the galaxy far, far, away is doing the same thing.
CONFIRMATION
Star Wars revealed that Lucasfilm Games is now the “official identity” for all gaming titles from Lucasfilm. The studio described the name as the component “that encompasses the company's rich catalog of video games” while keeping its eye “toward the future.”
Lucasfilm also confirmed that the logo for Lucasfilm games “will appear in all future Lucasfilm Games titles.” The logo can be seen below.
Along with the announcement, a short sizzle reel was unveiled, showcasing previous Star Wars games that left a mark in the eyes of many fans.
WHAT THIS MEANS
This is a significant development for the video game branch of Lucasfilm since it essentially marks a brand new era. In a way, creating a single identity for every Star Wars game on different platforms delivers a sense of uniformity.
Interestingly, the reveal of Lucasfilm Games was previously teased by the company's manager of digital content, admitting that he “(hasn't) been this excited for the future of Star Wars gaming in a long time.” True enough, this was a bold (and unexpected) announcement from Lucasfilm.
Moreover, this essentially means that more games will be announced soon that will no doubt excite fans, but it remains to be seen which ones will be put under development. However, there are a wide array of possibilities.
Given the popularity of The Mandalorian, it's possible that a video game centered on bounty hunters of the galaxy could be in the mix. Meanwhile, the sequel to Jedi: The Fallen Order has been a subject of discussion among fans while a follow-up to Star Wars: Squadron is also likely.
Whatever the case, it will be interesting to find out what Lucasfilm Games will accomplish in the next few years.
