WandaVision: Elizabeth Olsen 'Fought' For Scarlet Witch's Comic-Accurate Costume
With four episodes under its belt, WandaVision is taking full advantage of its television format both in-universe and out.
Using long-form storytelling to tell an exciting narrative, the Disney+ show has been able to interweave some dark elements into its cheery sitcom premise. Wanda Maximoff is at the center of all of this, being the star of her own show in all senses.
Marvel's first Phase 4 entry seems to be heading towards a Scarlet Witch suit more akin to her comic book appearance, as evidenced by a Halloween episode seen in trailers. Posters for the series also show another outfit, deviating from the classic look while containing many of its core attributes.
The WandaVision actress previously bemoaned Wanda Maximoff's costume from the comics, originally calling it "so horrible." In a more recent interview, it seems that Olsen has a new opinion regarding Scarlet Witch's comic book outfit...
ELIZABETH OLSEN CHANGES HER TUNE
In an interview on Vanity Fair's Still Watching podcast, Elizabeth Olsen discussed the process of adapting Wanda Maximoff's outfit from the comics.
Although previously being adverse to wearing Scarlet Witch's comic book costume, Olsen was "so excited" to wear the classic suit this time around:
"I was so excited! Actually, what hap--...we have a Halloween episode and they were trying to figure out how big of a nod to the character we were going to do and it did start off with the classic, um, Scarlet Witch costume. It was kind of like, um, like a gypsy thing that has to wear a, y'know, a headband and I, like, fought for it. I was like 'No, we have to, like, we have to go full into it...this is like the greatest thing, if Paul's doing it, I'm doing it...'"
The WandaVision lead also teased that she is wearing the suit for a good portion of the episode, saying it "was so fun:"
"And so, it was...and I'm really in it, it's not just a flash...I'm really in the costume for quite a bit. And, um, it was so fun! I loved it, and it was the perfect way to wear that costume, because you can't take that costume seriously."
A COMIC ACCURATE SCARLET WITCH SUIT
Scarlet Witch's original comic book outfit is a tricky one to adapt, but WandaVision seems to have found the right context to fold it into the universe.
It is interesting to see how much Olsen has changed her mind regarding the original suit in just over a year, but perhaps this can be attributed to how the ensemble has even still been slightly adjusted to fit the MCU. Regardless, it is great to hear that the WandaVision star is reveling in the fact that they were able to bring the outfit to screen.
As Elizabeth Olsen says that she wears the Scarlet Witch get-up for "quite a bit," fans of the look are in for a treat (or a trick) during WandaVision's Halloween episode. With both Wanda and Vision donning their superhero spandex, perhaps the spooky season will force them to use their powers in front of the inhabitants of Westview.
It is still unknown in which episode Wanda will don her classic costume. "Episode 4" of WandaVision is currently streaming on Disney+ in the meantime.
