Captain Marvel 2 Casting Two New Characters, Including Clive Owen-Type Role

Captain Marvel 2

The MCU is entering a new age of heroes following the departure of Robert Downey Jr's Iron Man and Chis Evans' Captain America. While the familiar characters of the past may be gone, Marvel fans are continuing to look to the future of the universe which is set to shift the focus to many of Marvel's other major players.

One of Phase 3's more controversial introductions came in the form of Brie Larson's Captain Marvel. The hero took the lead in the studio's first female-led solo film, turning back the clock to a 90s setting as Carol Danvers' origin story was explored. Despite the divisive response to the first title, Captain Marvel still managed to rake in enough cash to earn herself a sequel under a new director, Nia DaCosta.

The secrets of the upcoming sequel have been kept tightly under wraps as very little is known about the story or even the setting of the film. While the first film held its focus in the past, Danvers' made her first appearance in modern-day with Avengers: Endgame, making it entirely possible they follow up on her most recent appearance with a modern sequel.

Aside from the recent director switch, several more heroic female cast members are also confirmed to join the sequel. Feige revealed during Disney's Investor Day, Iman Vellani's Ms. Marvel who will make her debut in her own Disney+ series this year — will appear in the sequel, along with Teyonah Parris' Monica Rambeau, who recently made her debut in WandaVision. Rambeau previously appeared as a child in the original Captain Marvel movie, however, Parris took up the role of the adult version of the character this year, as she joins the ranks of SWORD.

While these castings fill out somewhat of a lead cast line-up, it leaves a lot of unanswered questions, but with a release set for next year, it seems time for some of those stones to be overturned.

MYSTERIOUS NEW FACES

The Illuminerdi has exclusively revealed several roles are currently being cast for next years' sequel, which will be aiming to shoot later this year.

The first of the roles is described as a “strong African-American role” with a “prominent part” in the movie. Marvel is currently said to be targeting Fresh Meat star Zawe Ashton for the role, an actress the studio has had in their eyes for some time for a multitude of different parts.

The second is described as a “red herring role” who is likely to see their demise early in the movie, however, no names are in the running yet. Marvel is said to be eyeing a Clive Owen "prototype" for this part, meaning that the studio is searching for an actor who has a similar look and on-screen essence as Owen.

WHO COULD THEY BE?

As very little information has been provided regarding the plot of the Captain Marvel sequel, it's hard to guess exactly what either of these roles could entail. Rambeau's involvement in the sequel seems to suggest the movie will take place following the events of Avengers: Endgame

The Illuminerdi speculated the African American role could potentially have some relation to either Rambeau or Nick Fury as the franchise has strong links to both. Meanwhile, the “early death” role is even harder to speculate, it seems likely the studio will be aiming to create a close bond between this character and the fans very quickly, enough to utilize some shock factor upon their death. This potentially means the character could be a major comic book face, or the studio may aim for a big actor who fans expect to stick around.

Captain Marvel 2 is set to hit theaters November 11, 2022 — directed by Nia DaCosta, and starring Brie Larson as Captain Marvel/Carol Danvers
