Marvel CCO Responds To Rumors of Chris Evans Coming Back as Captain America

Chris Evans as Captain America, Avengers: Endgame

During the events of Avengers: Endgame, Captain America was sent on a mission to return all the Infinity Stones to their timelines. When sent through the time machine, he was supposed to reappear moments later to Bruce Banner, Sam Wilson, and Bucky Barnes. However, he never returned to the time machine, and it is revealed that he decided to go back in time to live a full life with Peggy Carter.

Instead of killing the character, this was viewed as a more apposite way to end Steve Rogers' story in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. As a surprise to many fans, Deadline reported in January that Chris Evans would be returning as Captain America for at least one more film. Soon after, Chris Evan's tweeted out "News to me" in response to Deadline's report. This put the report in question for a lot of fans, but others speculated he could be playing coy.

A new report has furthered the unlikelihood that Evans will return as Cap, however.

CHRIS EVANS WILL NOT RETURN*

Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige was recently interviewed by Entertainment Weekly where he further refuted the report that Evans would return as Captain America.

Feige doubled down on Evan's tweet saying, “I rarely answer no to anything anymore because things are always surprising me with what happens, but that rumor, I think, was dispelled rather quickly by the man himself.”

Interestingly, he didn't outright say no, but he indicated that Evans was telling the truth in that there are no current plans.

A NEW CAPTAIN AMERICA ERA

The MCU is heading into a new Captain America era with the start of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. Even though the name Captain America isn't present in the title, this story will act largely as a spiritual successor to The First Avenger's trilogy. Specifically, Sam Wilson, Bucky Barnes, Sharon Carter, and Baron Zemo were all introduced in previous Captain America films.

A major part of this show will be filling in Cap's shoes, especially for The Falcon, who was gifted Rogers' shield at the end of EndgameThe world has lost God's Righteous Man, and it will be up to Wilson and Barnes to live up to that legacy or at least try. Whether there is a second season of Bucky and Sam's adventures or a fourth Captain America, all signs point to these characters continuing as heroes in the MCU for many years to come.

Evans served his time. Since picking up the shield in 2011's Captain America: The First Avenger, the Boston native starred in three solo films and four Avengers titles. He spent eight years as the same character. Fans may miss Evans as the star-spangled superhero, but Feige and crew at Marvel Studios have a plan for the future of the character.

A new Captain America era begins March 19, 2021, when The Falcon and The Winter Soldier premieres on Disney+.
