Falcon and Winter Soldier: Mystique and Other X-Men Referenced on Official MCU Website
Marvel Studios is riding a tidal wave of excitement thanks to the first three episodes of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier on Disney+. This post-Avengers: Endgame adventure is helping expand on the legacy of Captain America while opening the door for future Marvel Cinematic Universe adventures.
One of the biggest plot points in “Episode 3” was the introduction of Madripoor, an important location through the history of Marvel Comics. Classically used in X-Men stories as the home of Wolverine, this country’s debut in the MCU is the first instance where material from properties formerly owned by 20th Century Fox joined the long-standing Marvel saga.
In celebration of Madripoor joining the MCU, Marvel Studios is giving fans a real-life taste of the fictional country...
TRAVELING TO FICTIONAL LANDS?
Marvel Studios unveiled an official website (www.exploremadripoor.com) highlighting the country of Madripoor, which made its MCU debut in “Episode 3” of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.
Included on the site are links to locations in Madripoor like Hightown, Lowtown, and Buccaneer Bay, all of which were explored through the course of "Episode 3." There are also Marvel Easter Eggs on the site, including references to Krakoa, Mystique,
Below are four photos showing some highlights of this website:
The website includes a page dedicated to Buccaneer Bay, where the second half of "Episode 3" took place. Sam, Bucky, Zemo, and Sharon found Dr. Nagel here as they fought off a hoard of bounty hunters in the process.
The Brass Monkey Saloon is featured as a part of Hightown in Madripoor. Here, travelers can find all the best snake and reptile-based drinks the country has to offer.
The site includes a secret section with shipping container logs. With the right numbers and passcode (via Comicbook.com's Phase Zero), fans can find even more well-hidden hints to Marvel's comic history.
Some of these shipping containers tease characters not yet utilized within the MCU, including Mystique and Cromwell (likely Lily Cromwell aka Baroness Blood) as well as the X-Men-related Dragoness and Krakoa.
THE MCU GIVING BACK TO DIEHARD FANS
Marvel Studios appears to be taking every opportunity to give back to fans of not only the MCU but comics in general.
While Madripoor is classically an X-Men location in the comics, the episode itself held back on introducing the world of mutants for the time being. However, the reference to the shape-shifting Mystique on this website is a fantastic tribute to the fact that the mutants will arrive in the MCU in the not-too-distant future.
Krakoa and Dragoness are other Easter Eggs tying back to the mutant legacy within Marvel Comics, while Baroness Blood has connections to vampires in the comic pages. With Blade coming to the MCU sometime in the next few years, this inclusion is a fantastic way to tease the half-human/half-vampire assassin making his debut.
Whether all of these teases come to fruition down the line is anybody's guess, but Marvel Studios is already doing a great job giving fans a wealth of teases that translate from the comics to the MCU. The team continues their tradition of laying out Easter Eggs for fans to find, and it will be exciting to find out what other hints are laid out in the last three episodes.
The first three episodes of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier are available to stream on Disney+.
