Marvel Kept Chris Evans' Captain America Status a Secret From Falcon and Winter Soldier's Creator
The Falcon and the Winter Soldier just finished its first season run, and with it came one huge change that will make shock waves throughout the MCU. That change? Fans have a brand-new Captain America, in form of Anthony Mackie's Sam Wilson.
After a season of questioning the idea of taking on the mantle, Sam finally figured out what his time holding that shield may mean to not only him, but to the world. But what about the man that started that legacy? Where in the world did Steve Rogers go?
The last time fans saw Chris Evans' Steve Rogers, he was an old man handing off a new shield to Sam while sitting on a bench overlooking the lake behind the former Avengers HQ. Since then, there hasn't been any word on what happened to that old man. Even the wide population within the MCU don't know, with the common theory being him on the moon.
Was the omission of Steve Rogers' fate purposeful? The answer may not be what one would expect...
WHERE DID CHRIS EVANS GO?
In an interview with Inverse, The Falcon and The Winter Soldier head writer Malcolm Spellman revealed the truth about what he knows of Chris Evans' Captain America when asked why the series kept the character's whereabouts so vague.
That truth? Well, it's as blunt as this: "Marvel won't tell me what happened to Steve..."
I’ve got to tell you the truth, my friend. Marvel won’t tell me what happened to Steve, so we were able to write whatever we wanted because we don’t know. We’re wondering if Steve’s on the moon too, you know what I’m saying? That’s as good a guess as anything because they won’t tell me.
TO THE MOON?
While the intention of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier was definitely to keep the spotlight on Sam Wilson, that didn't keep people from focusing on Steve Rogers' absence.
It's hard to blame fans, seeing as they've all been with the character for a decade now. It's certainly an odd choice by Marvel to wrap it in such secrecy, seeing as the attention the mystery draws can easily detract from the real story being told.
In Avengers: Endgame, Steve's happy ending with Peggy was meant to be a conclusion to the character. That seems to obviously not be the case, or at least not the whole story. If it was, then Marvel would have shared the details a long time ago. Needless to say, there are certainly plans for the character in the future.
It was recently reported that Chris Evans' will be reprising the role sometime in the near future, in either one of the films or a Disney+ series. The specifics are unknown, as is the capacity of his role.
Surely one of the future projects will explore what Steve Rogers went through in that alternate timeline, and where he is now. In fact, the exploration of all that is likely to bring Steve Rogers back into the fold of the wider MCU, which is never a bad thing.
