Marvel Teases Black Widow's True Villain In New Trailer
Black Widow is shaping up to be the last hurrah for Natasha Romanoff in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, meaning that the film will need to wrap up unresolved storylines of the famed Avenger.
Directed by Cate Shortland, the Scarlett Johansson-led project will explore Romanoff's life during the events in between Captain America: Civil War and Avengers: Infinity War while also tackling the hero's traumatic past in the Red Room along the way.
In the past few months, a good chunk of the discussion for Black Widow was focused on the film's numerous delays. But, it looks like the focus will now shift to its mysterious narrative, due to the arrival of a surprise trailer. The newly-released footage showcased fresh looks at the prequel while also providing more context on what's really going on in the movie's core storyline.
That said, it seems that the trailer managed to offer more clues about the nefarious plans of Taskmaster for Romanoff.
DREYKOV'S ROLE IN BLACK WIDOW REVEALED
The new trailer for Black Widow seemingly revealed that Ray Winstone's Dreykov is controlling Taskmaster.
At the 1:16 mark of the video, Dreykov can be seen instructing the Marvel villain to carry out a potential mission.
Meanwhile, at the 1:12 mark, the character can be seen monitoring the situation from the Red Room. Based on what's been revealed so far, it's possible that this scene of Dreykov is happening during Taskmaster's pursuit of Natasha and Yelena in Budapest, with the villain giving instructions to his "agent" of destruction.
On a separate note, during the first teaser trailer, Dreykov was seen conversing with a certain Black Widow, but it's hard to figure out who exactly the character is. A safe bet would be Rachel Weisz's Melina Vostokoff, and she could possibly confront the villain headfirst due to her emotional ties to her “daughters.”
DREYKOV'S MYSTERIOUS GOAL
It seems that Natasha Romanoff will have her hands full in terms of dealing with her dangerous past in Black Widow, and Dreykov's addition could spell trouble for the hero even more.
For context, Ray Winstone's character has been revealed to be the head of the Red Room, but the final trailer also confirmed that Taskmaster “controls” the organization. Based on this information, Taskmaster is likely a pawn in the grand master plan of Dreykov, and this could hint that the pair has a similar dynamic to Hydra's Alexander Pierce and the Winter Soldier during the Captain America sequel.
In many ways, this is a fitting reveal and this could have a Deja Vu effect towards Romanoff, considering that she was part of the fall of SHIELD and Hydra in Washington D.C.
The unfinished business of Romanoff could hint at the hero's mission to finish off the combined might of Dreykov and Taskmaster altogether. This could be the reason why she needed to recruit her Russian family one last time, considering that the inside knowledge and familiarity of Red Guardian and Melina Vostokoff will come in handy.
Meanwhile, Dreykov's line of bringing Romanoff “home” to the Red Room is the first major hint of the villain's ultimate goal. It appears that Dreykov was not pleased when Romanoff joined the Avengers to save the world, and introducing Taskmaster in the mix could be his way of mocking the heroic choice of the character.
By being able to copy the moves of her Avengers teammates, facing Taskmaster should be an emotional challenge for Romanoff, thus making the villain a suitable foe for the hero in the eyes of Dreykov.
No doubt, Black Widow is filled with secrets and twists, and there's a strong chance that it will all trace back to Dreykov when the credits roll.
Black Widow is set to premiere on Disney+ and in theaters on July 9, 2021.
