Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic Remake Is Now More Likely Than Ever
Excitement for a Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic remake has been at an all-time high recently. This January, Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier teased that a KOTOR remake was in development and that fans would “never guess” what developer was making the game.
A few weeks later, Schreier responded to speculation about Aspyr Media developing the remake by saying “Hmm!”
After some teases, however, Schreier has finally confirmed that the speculation about the remake’s developer is true.
ASPYR MEDIA IS DEVELOPING A KOTOR REMAKE
Aspyr Media, a developer known for porting several Star Wars video games, is working on a remake of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, according to Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier.
In an interview with MinnMax's Ben Hanson, Schreier confirmed that the porting studio is developing a remake of the classic game. The conversation begins around the 58:40 mark.
When Hanson said “...which is why it’s nice that someone other than EA is making a KOTOR game,” Schreier replied:
“That’s true, yeah. This is public at this point. I mean, I basically confirmed that Aspyr, which is a company that has ported a bunch of KOTOR games, is working on a remake.”
As of now, there has been no official announcement of a Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic remake from Aspyr Media itself.
MORE DEVELOPERS TACKLING THE STAR WARS UNIVERSE
Schreier’s cheeky tease a few months ago is now, seemingly, a full-blown confirmation, and fans can breathe a sigh of relief knowing that a Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic remake is on the way. It’s unclear when Aspyr Media will officially announce the game, but it seems likely that a reveal might be on the way soon given Schreier’s recent openness about the project.
With EA’s exclusive deal on publishing Star Wars games set to expire in 2023, more publishers and developers will get the chance to tell their own tales in a galaxy far, far away. Earlier this year, Ubisoft announced its intention to create an open-world Star Wars game with Lucasfilm Games. Aspyr Media, it seems, will also get the opportunity to craft its own adventure in the beloved universe.
Aside from the confirmation of the game’s existence, Schreier didn’t offer any details on the game’s story or mechanics. Some fans have questioned whether the game will actually be called Knights of the High Republic, which would focus on the Jedi during Disney’s recently created High Republic era. Either way, fans can likely expect a sprawling Star Wars RPG similar to the original Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic.
