It's no secret that The Suicide Squad is one of the most hotly anticipated DCEU projects this year.

Directed by James Gunn, the hybrid reboot sequel will showcase a new version of Task Force X, but with holdovers from David Ayer's 2016 feature such as Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn, Joel Kinnaman's Rick Flagg, and Jai Courtney's Captain Boomerang.

Plot details are still being kept under wraps, but marketing for The Suicide Squad has revealed a good chunk of juicy narrative tidbits. Trailers have confirmed that Starro the Conqueror will serve as the chief villain of the film, and Task Force X will be split into two teams

Throughout the promotional drive of The Suicide Squad, Gunn has been sharing a wide array of reveals through social media, which includes posting behind-the-scenes images to teasing mind-blowing story beats.

Now, another wave of interesting tidbits has emerged from the director.

In his latest Instagram Q&A, The Suicide Squad director James Gunn answered a slew of questions about the upcoming DCEU film, and one of them is about the film's mysterious death toll.

Without spoiling anything, Gunn revealed that “almost all” of the members of Task Force X will die in the movie.

TASK FORCE X IS IN DANGER IN THE DC FILM

The Suicide Squad will definitely deliver gut-wrenching death scenes, but the fact that Gunn teased that “almost all” of the Task Force X members will die in the film spells trouble for its ensemble cast.

The combined threat of Starro and the rising tensions in Corto Maltese is the likely culprit of the death of the Task Force X members. There's a sense that this has been foreshadowed already, mainly due to the idea that Viola Davis' Amanda Waller will send two teams for the mission.

The first team which will be composed of members like TDK, Savant, and Weasel could have failed the earlier mission, thus forcing Waller to recruit heavyweights like King Shark and Bloodsport to accomplish the goal at hand.

This means that the first part of The Suicide Squad will likely include a death montage for the DC villains, and Gunn's comment perfectly sets up that sequence. This could also echo Gunn's statement about the film being the “most fun to make,” possibly alluding to the creation of certain death scenes for his stacked cast.

Meanwhile, Gunn's description of Harley Quinn as someone who is “full-tilt” is further established by the insane energy of the character from the trailers. It looks like the impressive performance of Margot Robbie as the famous DC anti-hero will be front and center in this film, and this should be a welcome sight for any DCEU fan.

Not much is known on what to expect of Nathan Fillon's TDK, but evidence suggests that he might be part of the film's first wave of deaths to establish the threat of Starro. Still, Gunn's excitement for the character goes to show that these villains will have their own compelling impact on the audiences.

Fans will find out who dies and survives when The Suicide Squad hits theaters and HBO Max on August 6, 2021.
