James Gunn Plans For Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 To Be His Last Movie In Franchise
It feels like it's been a long time since fans have seen the Guardians of the Galaxy. Having been over two years now since the release of Avengers: Endgame, the last that anyone has seen of them was just before taking off from Earth with Thor in tow. But, what of their next adventure?
While fans can look forward to seeing their favorite group of cosmic misfits in Thor: Love and Thunder in some capacity, their next "solo" adventure isn't set until May 5, 2023—a release date that was just unveiled. That isn't including the Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special, of course, though there's no telling what that will entail yet.
With the third film in the Guardians series likely exploring Gamora's whereabouts while also diving deeper into the Guardians themselves, where will that leave them all by the film's end?
More importantly, will fans ever see another Guardians of the Galaxy film directed by James Gunn? That's a good question, one that Gunn himself was recently asked on Twitter...
THE END OF THE GUARDIANS?
On Twitter, James Gunn was asked by a fan if Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 would be his last film in the franchise—or if there would be a fourth. Gunn was quick to respond, saying that "I'm planning on it being my last."

WILL JAMES GUNN TRULY BE DONE?
This isn't the first time that James Gunn has commented on this very question. Back in June 2020, Gunn was asked the exact same question, but his response was an entirely different one. Instead, Gunn said that the film is "probably my last one, and probably the last with the current team." He concluded his statement with an additional note, teasing that "you never know!"
A few years ago, one wouldn't have guessed that not only would James Gunn be helming a brand-new Suicide Squad film, but that he would also be rehired by Disney for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. This goes to show that anything could happen. Yes, even a fourth film led by the ever-so-busy director could be in the works.
Gunn has also commented that he may only work on TV shows after the third Guardians film. The variety of statements given by Gunn shows his ever-adjusting mindset when it comes to what his future will hold.
So, fans should not take this as a confirmation of any sort, and they'll simply have to wait to see what the future of the Guardians of the Galaxy will look like after Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 debuts in two years on May 5, 2023.
