Sony Boss Comments on Spider-Man's Sinister Six Movie Chances

Sony may have agreed to share Tom Holland's Spider-Man with Disney, but that hasn't stopped the studio from developing its own cinematic universe of movies based on Spider-Man comics.

Tom Hardy has already fronted a Venom-focused film, and the second instalment is on the way later in 2021 with Venom: Let There Be Carnage. There's also Jared Leto's upcoming Morbius film and the rumored Spider-Woman movie from Olivia Wilde.

There's also the most recent news that notable Spider-Man villain Kraven the Hunter will be getting his own solo film with Aaron Taylor-Johnson in the lead. As Kraven is a well-known member of the Sinister Six, this announcement has fans wondering if Sony is finally gathering the villainous team for an on-screen debut.

Speaking to Variety, Sony Pictures President Sanford Panitch opened up about the studio's plans for its Marvel films

Panitch was asked whether the upcoming Kraven movie could be a new attempt at bringing the Sinister Six to the screen. Panitch neither confirmed nor denied the idea, saying they have to work on these types of movies "in the dark."

“It’s tough, because I think these projects are the kind of things we have to work on in the dark. They’re not ready until they’re ready."

The Sony President said the studio didn't rush the Kraven movie and that finding Aaron Taylor Johnson as the lead was "kismet."

"‘Kraven’ is a great example because we just didn’t rush it. We could have made that three plus years ago. It’s just now the script’s awesome, J.C. was the right choice, and we found the movie star because it was just kismet, and watching this other movie and realizing that could be the perfect casting.”

While Panitch dodged the topic of a Sinister Six movie, he did admit "it would be very cool, wouldn’t it?”

IS THERE HOPE FOR A SINISTER SIX MOVIE?

Panitch didn't straight out confirm there are plans for the Sinister Six, but given he said they prefer to work on these movies in secret until they're ready, there's still a chance the studio is working on a project right now without the public knowing about it.

Given the success of villain teams like in DC's Suicide Squad, it would make sense for Sony to bring its own squad of villains to the screen, particularly one as popular as the Sinister Six.

The studio originally laid out plans for this during Andrew Garfield's The Amazing Spider-Man films, but they never panned out. Setting them up in a Kraven solo film could be the second chance that Sony needs to bring this iconic team to the screen.

There are also rumors that the MCU is attempting to bring the Sinister Six to the screen in Spider-Man: No Way Home. This may be a completely different approach to how Sony tackles it, but either way, it looks like plans for the villainous team haven't gone away.
