Venom 2 Director Andy Serkis Addresses Connections With Spider-Man & MCU
While Marvel Studios is teasing fans with tidbits of footage for its upcoming slate, Sony is busy building up hype Venom: Let There Be Carnage ahead of its September 24, 2021 release date.
The official trailer for the film provided fans with a first look at Woody Harrelson's Carnage in addition to more antics between Eddie Brock and his friendly neighbor symbiote. One scene from the new footage even includes a sly reference to Sam Raimi's Spider-Man films, with an issue of the Daily Bugle resembling the design from the original movies.
Though Venom has been said to be disconnected from the MCU, many have wondered whether a potential team-up could occur between Tom Hardy's Venom and Tom Holland's Spider-Man. A piece of merchandise hints towards Marvel's webslinger having an impact on Eddie Brock, with Venom noticeably having his trademark Spider-Man-inspired logo on his chest.
With an appearance from the MCU's Spidey and a connection to Raimi's Spider-Man trilogy still unclear, Serkis has now addressed whether Venom 2 will cross over with the wallcrawler...
ANDY SERKIS CLARIFIES VENOM'S SPIDER-MAN CONNECTION
In a trailer breakdown for IGN, director Andy Serkis discussed whether there would be a connection between Venom and Spider-Man's respective Marvel universes in Venom: Let There Be Carnage.
Although the two characters have a notable history together, Serkis stated that Let There Be Carnage is being treated as "very much as it's his own world:"
"Obviously, there are links between Venom and Spider-Man in the Marvel Universe and the Spider-Man story, but in this, you know we're treating this very much as it's his own world, the Venom story is his own world; there are nods and little moments that just like this newspaper Daily Bugle, of course."
Though Eddie Brock is supposedly "unaware at this point of other characters like Spider-Man" in the Venom sequel, the director said "we'll wait and see:"
"But on the whole... he's unaware, they're unaware at this point of other characters like Spider-Man, so that's the way we've chosen to play this particular episode of the movie, but well we'll wait and see, we'll see what little things you can pick out of it."
VENOM STAYS IN HIS OWN MARVEL UNIVERSE...BUT FOR HOW LONG?
While both the Venom movies and Morbius have featured key references and character inclusions relating to Spider-Man and the MCU, Serkis seems certain that Venom will exist within his own disconnected universe.
The first Venom film very much treated the character as being separate from any pre-established universe. Therefore, it would make sense that Eddie Brock would continue to find his footing on his own away from other Spider-Man-related characters for the time being.
Andy Serkis could, of course, be playing coy, diverting attention to hide a potential surprise appearance from Marvel Studios' webhead. Continuous references to Spider-Man and Serkis' comments that "we'll wait and see" could ultimately hint towards a possible crossover down the line.
With Spider-Man: No Way Home possibly exploring the far reaches of the multiverse, perhaps this could create the perfect opportunity for Holland and Hardy to interact on screen.
Venom: Let There Be Carnage slithers into theaters on September 24, 2021.
