Zack Snyder Says He Wouldn't Survive Making a Star Wars Movie

Even though Star Wars Day 2021 wasn't the biggest news day for the franchise, fans are still in for everything coming from the galaxy far, far away in the not-too-distant future. Disney+ hosted the premiere for The Bad Batch, which even included a brand-new intro celebrating the vast history of characters in the space opera franchise.

Lucasfilm and Disney have been known recently for bringing in the best names in the business to direct its projects including Thor: Love and Thunder's Taika Waititi and Wonder Woman 1984's Patty Jenkins. Even considering this fact, decades of evidence has proven that Star Wars is one of the toughest challenges any filmmaker takes on.

This continues to be the case with recent news of someone who hasn't even joined the universe yet.

ZACK SNYDER TALKS STAR WARS

In an interview with The Times in the U.K., director Zack Snyder tackled the idea of directing a movie in the Star Wars universe.

Snyder was honest about being "a director with a personal point of view" while joining a long-standing franchise like Star Wars. Commenting on how it's easier for him personally "to create a world and invite you into it," he admited that he doesn't "think I would survive" joining a pre-existing universe like this:

“Where it gets difficult is when you take a director with a personal point of view and ask him to participate in a thing that is not asking for that. The journeyman film-maker? There are a lot of them, and they’re good. I just happen to have a specific point of view. The lesson I’ve learnt is it’s much easier for me, as a film-maker, to create a world and invite you into it. As opposed to me saying, ‘Let me put my cog in your wheel.’ Like, I would love to make a Star Wars movie, I know a lot about it — but I don’t think I would survive that.”

SNYDER STAYING HIS OWN MAN

Zack Snyder made a name for himself through years of unique and breathtaking visuals in blockbuster movies. This vision and filmmaking style was utilized in full for the DC Extended Universe, in which he directed two full movies and produced all but one film in the franchise before releasing Zack Snyder's Justice League in March 2021.

While Snyder has found plenty of success with the top characters from DC Comics, Star Wars seems to be an entirely different challenge for him due to its long-standing history. After all, this is a movie franchise that first came to screens in 1977 and now holds over a dozen unique entries that form one largely coherent story.

Snyder has put out some fantastic work over the years, but these quotes make it clear that he would want to build a franchise like this from the ground up instead of joining later.

This may not be a match that ever comes to be, but it's great to see that he at least has an appreciation for stories as successful as Star Wars.
