HBO Max Is Looking at Game of Thrones Actor To Play Green Lantern's Sinestro

Green Lantern Sinestro Tobias Menzies

Green Lantern might only have a single live-action outing from 2011, but that will all change due to the confirmed arrival of an HBO Max series under the same name.

The upcoming DC show already received a straight-to-series order from HBO Max, and it will follow the story of multiple Green Lanterns like Jessica Cruz, Guy Gardner, Simon Baz, and the original ring-wielding hero, Alan Scott.

Green Lantern was reported to have 10 one-hour episodes for its first season, and it will be co-written and executive produced by Seth Grahame-Smith and Arrow's Marc Guggenheim.

Plot details are still being kept under wraps, but it is expected that the narrative will expand through time due to the inclusion of several notable Green Lanterns. Aside from the main heroes, fan-favorite characters from the Lantern lore like Kilowog and Sinestro have been confirmed to join the space adventure.

Now, it looks like HBO Max has nabbed an actor to play Sinestro for the series.

The Illuminerdi reported that Game of Thrones actor Tobias Menzies is in talks to play the role of Thaal Sinestro in HBO Max's Green Lantern series.

Menzies is best known for his roles on HBO's Rome, Netflix's The Crown, and Starz's Outlander series.

SINESTRO VS. GREEN LANTERN

The reported casting of Tobias Menzies as Thaal Sinestro serves as a major development for the Green Lantern series.

The actor has played complex roles such as his depiction of Edmund Tully in HBO's Game of Thrones. In that series, Menzies' character is an impetuous military leader, meaning he had the tendency to act on his own accord to fulfill orders.

This would be in line with his future portrayal of Sinestro in the series, considering that a previous casting report described the Lantern as both a “warrior monk” and “the greatest of all the Green Lanterns."

Given that the series will reportedly span over time, it might portray Sinestro as a key ally of the Green Lantern Corps at first before he eventually turns against them at some point.

This creates a unique opportunity for Menzies to be creative when it comes to approaching the role of Sinestro, and there's a chance that he could even depict the character as a sympathetic villain at the tail-end of the show.

At this point, it is unknown when the Green Lantern series will be available to stream on HBO Max, but the casting of Sinestro alongside the reported involvement of Superman and Lois' Lee Toland Krieger to direct the pilot suggests that the premiere is not too far away.
