Loki: Episode 2 Credits Reveal Spoilery Character Might Not Be Who We Think
Warning: This article contains major spoilers for Loki Episode 2.
In the premiere of Loki, titled "Glorious Purpose," fans were introduced to a mysterious Variant of Loki killing Minutemen for their reset charges. In the latest episode, "The Variant," not only did the Variant finally reveal herself, but stole those TVA reset charges to destroy the Sacred Timeline.
When Sophia Di Martino was cast in Loki, fans instantly assumed her to be some variation of Lady Loki from the comics or maybe even Amora the Enchantress — something that was only strengthened by leaked set photos of her in costume. However, the credits in some foreign translations of the show call her new character by an unexpected name.
A VARIANT NAMED SYLVIE
In the cast list for the latest episode of Loki, Sophia Di Martino's character is simply called "The Variant," which is the same for most other translations.
For example, the Spanish dub lists the actress as "La Variante," but one country seems to have made a mistake by prematurely giving a proper name to the character.
In the cast list for the Castilian dub, the actress is listed as having provided the voice for "Sylvie."
What's significant about this name is that Sylvie is an actual character from the comics who has an integral connection to the God of Mischief, and acts as a second form of the infamous Marvel character Enchantress.
A LOKI BY ANOTHER NAME?
One of the most telling moments with Di Martino's Sylvie is that she detested being called Loki, which could point to either a crisis of identity with being one of an infinite number of Lokis or that she isn't a Variant of Loki at all.
In the comics, when Asgard was temporarily stationed on Earth, a human girl named Sylvie Lushton suddenly woke up with magical powers similar to that of Amora the Enchantress. Unknown to her, these powers were actually given to her by Loki, seemingly out of curiosity and causing mischief.
However, if Sylvie isn't actually a Variant of Loki, then it's odd that the TVA has designated her as one. This character may be a composite of multiple characters, like Amora, Lady Loki, and, of course, Sylvie.
Only time will tell what exactly Di Martino's Sylvie has planned with the Time-Keepers now that she has begun destroying the Sacred Timeline.
