Loki: Sylvie Actress Sophia Di Martino Isn't Sure About Her Marvel Future
Warning - This article contains spoilers for Episode 4 of Loki.
Loki has been all the rage as of late. Tom Hiddleston's first Marvel solo outing as the infamous God of Mischief has been a hit for many—even breaking records. The story of a misplaced God trying to overthrow an organization claiming to control time itself has certainly been hitting the right notes for fans across the world.
One of the biggest things that the show has done to date is introducing audiences to an entirely different Variant of Loki in Sophia Di Martino's Sylvie. A Loki whose tragic backstory rivals the Loki fans have known for a decade, she has brought out an entirely different side of the Asgardian trickster. She even played a key part in Loki revealing his bisexuality.
Needless to say, Sylvie has been a big hit. Fans love her, and it would be hard to believe that they'd want to part with the character as soon as the show ends.
So, can fans expect to see her in future Marvel projects?
SOPHIA DI MARTINO AND SYLVIE'S MARVEL FUTURE
In an interview with Radio Times, Sophia Di Martino, the person responsible for bringing Sylvie to life, was asked about any potential connections to classic Thor villain The Enchantress—especially as they share the same name and powers.
Martino's answer was an honest one, with her saying that "it's an entirely new story:"
"Um… she’s been inspired by the comics, and our story is inspired by the comics. But Loki is a new story, and it’s a new backstory for Sylvie. So it’s an entirely new story. But she is enchanting people, and therefore an enchantress. So… yeah."
Pressing on, Radio Times inquired if it was daunting for Martino to step into a big role with such complex mythology attached to it. To that, Martino declared that she just tries "to take each moment as it comes:"
"You know, I just think I buried my head in the sand a little bit. I’ve just tried to take each moment as it comes. I’m not the kind of person that gets sort of starstruck. I mean, I want to do a really good job.
As for following the lead that Tom Hiddleston has on her, Martino made it clear that she is "never going to compete with that," and that what Tom has done so far is "really impressive:"
"It’s a really impressive 10 years that Tom has poured all of this energy into this character. And that is super-impressive. But I’m never going to try to compete with that or anything. I just want to be a part of it. And so I think “excitement” is probably the best word for it. I’m just super-excited and grateful to be here."
Of course, Radio Times had to ask the pressing question that many fans are wondering: would Martino be open to playing the role again in the future? Of course, Martino seemed open to doing just that, though "[we'd] have to ask Mr. Feige:"
"I'd love to play her again, but I have no idea about that kind of thing...You have to ask Mr. Feige."
SYLVIE'S OWN SACRED MCU TIMELINE
It's no surprise to see Martino hesitant to answer such a big question. Everyone knows the level of secrecy that Marvel Studios tries to uphold, so even if Martino knew that she was coming back, she wouldn't be able to reveal it.
At the least, fans now know that she is perfectly willing to come back and seems to be enjoying the role. It also definitely looks like this whole world of Marvel is particularly new to her, so it's good that all of it doesn't seem to be overwhelming. With such a large scale and crazy time-traveling adventure, one could imagine that it would amount to quite a lot at points.
As for whether there is any chance that Sylvie will make it out of the show alive, it's hard to tell. She has gotten a heavy dose of focus and attention, so Marvel could easily keep her going forward—especially as fans seem to have embraced her with open arms.
Loki only has two episodes left, so the answer to Sylvie's future isn't that far out. First, fans will have to come to terms with the fact that there is in fact an alligator Loki. Maybe they'll go on to be a key part of the MCU going forward.
The next episode of Loki will stream on Disney+ on Wednesday, July 7, 2021.
