Marvel Boss Reveals WandaVision's Weird Connection To BlacKkKlansman
Marvel Studios officially entered the Marvel Cinematic Universe's Phase 4 in January 2021 with their first Disney+ exclusive series, WandaVision.
Since the show was the first piece of MCU content to be released since Spider-Man: Far From Home in July 2019, fans were ecstatic to finally be able to see a few of their favorite heroes on-screen again.
The show gained strong traction, leading viewers to anticipate what could possibly be coming next throughout the rest of Phase 4. It also set up the futures of both Scarlet Witch, who will be a prominent character in the upcoming film, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, along with Vision, who was thought to have seen his final moments at the end of Avengers: Infinity War.
In comparison to other projects in the MCU, WandaVision was different, so how did Marvel Studios come up with a title that was just as unorthodox as the show itself?
HOW KEVIN FEIGE CAME UP WITH THE NAME WANDAVISION
Kevin Feige, president of Marvel Studios, revealed to Rolling Stone how Spike Lee's biographical drama BlacKkKlansman influenced the title for WandaVision and how it's "the weirdest connection ever:"
"I didn’t want to call the show Wanda and Vision or The Scarlet Witch and Vision. I was at the AFI [American Film Institute] luncheon in 2018 and I remember looking at the board where it listed the top 10 films and seeing BlacKkKlansman. I remember thinking, 'How cool is that? They just mushed those two words together and the audience just accepts that as a title.' So I thank Spike Lee for making BlacKkKlansman. I know that’s the weirdest connection ever, but that’s how it came about."
INSPIRATIONS CAN COME FROM ANYWHERE
It is very interesting to see that Feige was able to take inspiration from a film like BlacKkKlansman.
It's important in both film and television to have an open mind to suggestions and inspirations. It is clear that, from the very beginning, Marvel Studios knew WandaVision would not be a typical project, so they wanted the title to reflect that.
Also, with Feige revealing that he "didn't want to call the show Wanda and Vision or The Scarlet Witch and Vision," it makes fans wonder just how many titles the studio toyed around with.
Ultimately, it would be interesting to see what other films or series Feige has taken inspiration from in the past with other MCU movies, and whether or not other project titles will have an effect on future films in the franchise.
