Marvel’s Kevin Feige Speaks on Incredible Hulk's Abomination Return In Shang-Chi

The MCU is known as a vast and ever-expanding universe. It's truly a unique beast, one that to this day has never been successfully replicated––even with as hard as Warner Brothers has tried with DC. It's quite the impressive feat that the entire thing exists in the state it does.

Of course, a lot of the credit for the MCU's continued success goes to none other than Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige. The man with a plan has been hard at work shaping the world, characters, and stories of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Even with the Infinity Saga complete, Feige remains dedicated to continuing the global phenomenon that he started.

One would think that after so long, things might be growing stale for Feige.Going into Phase 4, that seems far from the truth. While planning future storylines is still undoubtedly a blast, it would seem that Marvel Studios' CEO still gets a kick out of the smaller things: like re-introducing a character from The Incredible Hulk that fans haven't seen for over a decade.

ABOMINATION VS. WONG

Abomination Shang-Chi Trailer

In a recent interview with Rotten Tomatoes, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige discussed details about the new trailer for Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. In this chat, Feige confirmed something that many fans noticed and obsessed over. The closing seconds of the film's recently released second trailer included two familiar figures pitted against each other: Abomination and Wong.

Teasingly, Feige said that the hulking green beast looks like someone fans haven't seen in a while, and that's because “the reason it looks like that is because that is Abomination fighting Wong.”

“Some fans said, ‘This looks like a character they hadn’t seen in many years named The Abomination, fighting a character that looks like Wong. And I can say that the reason it looks like that is because that is Abomination fighting Wong.”

Feige continued discussing how having the ability to bring back characters that fans haven't seen in years, like Abomination, is one of the joys of working on the MCU, and to see fans embrace things like that "is great fun."

“[It’s] a fun thing to have a character that we haven’t had on screen in over a decade show up again in the MCU. And to see fans on that little tag of the trailer recognize that and embrace that is great fun.”

FEIGE APPROVED

The Incredible Hulk may not be one of the MCU's most highly-regarded films, but it is one of the entries that is forgotten about the most; in that same light, it's held the least amount of ties to the going ons of the Marvel universe.

The first thing to pop up since that movie released in 2008, aside from the recast Hulk character of course, was General Ross in Captain America: Civil War.

That plays a big part in why Abomination's resurfacing was such a moment––on top of the fact that villains showing up throughout different movies is awesome on its own right, and doesn't happen nearly enough. While it's known that the character was set to resurface in She-Hulk, Emil Blomsky's appearance in Shang-Chi came as a big surprise.

As for why Abomination is fighting Wong, that's something that fans will have to wait until the film's release on September 3rd to find out. Until then, why not enjoy theorizing about what crazy thing will go down next in Loki, or maybe pump up the hype for Black Widow's approaching release?
