Marvel Studios Producer Teases MCU Movies Featuring What If Characters

What If...?, Avengers: Endgame, Doctor Strange, Captain America

What If...? will be one of the most unique and exciting projects in the MCU.

With the series debuting in soon on Disney+What If...? will take fans on a ride back to stories and events that have already been seen or that fans are familiar with but with a twist.

For example, Marvel Studios released a clip of the show's first episode. Instead of Captain America, Captain Carter will be the hero of the episode, allowing viewers to get a look at what it could have been like with Peggy Carter taking up the heroic mantle instead of Steve Rogers.

As the MCU's first animated series gets closer to airing its first episode, anticipation is at an all-time high. The question of Marvel Studios having any future plans with these What If...? plotlines or them being a one-and-done thing has already been raised.

Thankfully, the show's executive producer has some insight to give on that topic.

WHAT IF...? SPIN-OFF STORIES

In a recent interview with Inverse, executive producer Brad Winderbaum discussed whether Marvel Studios would be open to the idea of creating spin-off stories with What If...? characters.

Winderbaum mentioned that "it's hard not to imagine" additional projects with these characters and optimistically added that he "hope(s) that one day" they can return to the "alternate timelines" of What If...?:

“We wanted each story to be able to be open and shut in that half an hour timeframe, but it's hard not to imagine more chapters with some of these characters. I hope that one day we do get to see more adventures in some of these alternate timelines.”

The series' executive producer also talked about how multiple plotlines from the What If...? comic books "ended up in the main continuity of the comic universe" and even gave a "prediction" that "a similar thing" could also take place within the MCU:

“All you have to do to prove that is look back at how many stories from the What If...? comics ended up in the main continuity of the comic universe. My prediction is a similar thing could happen on the cinematic side as well.”

SUPERHERO ZOMBIES IN LIVE-ACTION?

The concept of What If...? is what really carries the anticipation and the excitement for this series.

FanFiction has always been a huge part of any fictional universe. Viewers or readers love to take characters and put them in different plotlines or fantasize about what could happen if this person was this person instead, and the fact that Marvel Studios is actually taking this to TV screens in the form of an animated Disney+ series is still surreal.

However, the only downside is that the episodes will only be 30 minutes in length, so it's hard to imagine fans not wanting more when they finish them.

If Winderbaum's prediction is right, and Marvel Studios does use concepts, characters, or plot points from What If...? and incorporates them into live-action, it would kill two birds, maybe even three, with one stone.

The MCU could then have more projects lined up in the future that it already knows would be successful, giving the studio some peace of mind on where to take its story next.

Fans would spend more time and go on more adventures with characters they were introduced to in the Disney+ series.

Then, finally, Marvel Studios would then be able to boast that an animated television show could also be crossed over into live-action, setting up other projects in the future that could follow suit.

It will be interesting to see what will happen once What If...? gets completely underway, with its first episode diving into Captain Carter.

The first episode of What If...? will premiere on Disney+ on Wednesday, August 11, 2021.
