Shang-Chi Director Teases Exciting Deleted Scenes

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is set to introduce Simu Liu (Kim's Convenience) as the MCU's first Asian superhero, marking a monumental time for the mega superhero franchise. 

The film is directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, and it will feature a stacked Asian ensemble who will join Liu such as Tony Leung, Awkwafina, Michelle Yeoh, and Doctor Strange's Benedict Wong. Major plot details of Shang-Chi are still being kept under wraps, but marketing already revealed that it will mainly focus on the father-son conflict between the titular martial artist and the real Mandarin of the MCU. 

Ahead of its exclusive theatrical release, early reactions toward Shang-Chi were overwhelmingly positive, with a good chunk of critics praising the unprecedented action scenes of the film. Shang-Chi will introduce a host of new characters and lore to the ever-expanding MCU, meaning that the film will do a lot of legwork to carefully lay the groundwork for these concepts. 

Now, it looks like some of those scenes from the Simu Liu-led film didn't make the final cut. 

SHANG-CHI'S DELETED SCENES TEASED

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings director Destin Daniel Cretton sat down with Screen Rant to talk about the film's deleted scenes.

Cretton confirmed that the film will have a "number of pretty fun and exciting" deleted scenes that will be unveiled on its home media release: 

"But there will be a number of pretty fun and exciting deleted scenes that you’ll be able to see whenever those things are released." 

MORE TIME WITH THE MANDARIN?

Deleted scenes have been a common staple for any film, but many would agree that the MCU's collection of them is always fascinating to watch since it provides a chance for the viewers to see projects in a different light. 

It isn't surprising that Cretton confirmed that Shang-Chi will include "exciting" deleted scenes in its home media release since it follows the MCU tradition. Still, given that the film has yet to be released to the public, it is unknown which moments ended up on the cutting room floor. 

It's possible that some of those scenes will be dedicated to the Mandarin's past considering that there was an early rumor that parts of Shang-Chi will be partially set during China’s Song Dynasty and the Turko-Persian Seljuk Dynasty. 

Sequences that would flesh out the lore surrounding the Ten Rings are one possibility for the confirmed deleted scenes as well as moments that could tie to Wenwu's mysterious past. 

Given that the trailers and promo spots for Shang-Chi highlight scenes involving the younger version of Simu Liu's MCU hero, there's also a chance that some deleted scenes could feature the Master of Kung Fu's past. 

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is set to premiere in theaters on September 3, 2021.
