Thor 1 Nearly Featured Chris Hemsworth Singing This Classic Marvel Theme Song
While the MCU is constantly looking forward to its nearly 20 projects coming over the next couple of years, there's always time to look back on the franchise's earliest days. Fans and Marvel's finest alike have been reminiscing on the MCU's success on many occasions since the Infinity Saga ended, and with 23 movies in the Infinity Saga, there are endless stories to reveal to the Marvel faithful.
Marvel Studios' fourth movie ever produced came in the form of Kenneth Branagh's Thor in 2011, which earned a modest box office return and set up Chris Hemsworth and Tom Hiddleston as Hollywood megastars. This movie pitted Marvel with some of its biggest challenges to date, expanding into the cosmic side of the MCU for the first time, and it delivered a thrilling, heartfelt adventure featuring Asgard and its people.
Coming in an age where outings like Guardians of the Galaxy and Eternals were far from development, Thor had the opportunity to be a unique story for the MCU with its otherworldly plot. As it turns out, there was even an idea to bring another interesting dynamic to this movie - one that would have put its stars' performing skills to the test.
THE GOD OF THUNDER - MIGHTY THOR!
A preview from a new collector's book entitled The Story of Marvel Studios: The Making of the Marvel Cinematic Universe revealed a scrapped scene from 2011's Thor, which featured its cast singing the theme song for one of the original animated Thor shows.
Chris Hemsworth (Thor), Tom Hiddleston (Loki), Josh Dallas (Fandral), and Jaimie Alexander, along with Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige, learned how to sing the theme song to Thor's portion of the animated Marvel Super Heroes show from 1966. The scene with this performance was shot, but it was cut from the movie.
"To a delighted Branagh, Josh Dallas, Hemsworth, Jaimie Alexander (Sif), and Feige, Kyle shares - via his laptop - composer Jaques Urbont’s 1966 theme song to The Mighty Thor segment of the animated Marvel Super Heroes TV series. At one point, there was an idea to have the cast sing it in a scene, which was shot and never used."
The lyrics to the theme song read as follows:
"Across the rainbow bridge of Asgard
Where the booming heavens roar
You'll behold in breathless wonder
The God of Thunder, Mighty Thor!"
THOR: THE MUSICAL
If there's one thing most MCU fans likely never expected, it would be Marvel Studios' finest Asgardians breaking out into a real-world song that first debuted 45 years prior.
With Marvel Comics having existed for more than 80 years, the entertainment industry quickly looked to use the characters in numerous forms of media in quick order. Many of these shows and movies have provided inspiration for the MCU, although this instance would certainly have been one of the most unique in MCU history.
Tom Hiddleston got to show off his singing prowess in Episode 3 of Loki, although none of the other stars of Thor have gotten that same opportunity in any other projects. Regardless, once this book is available to the public, this deleted scene will be one at the top of the list of those that fans are dying to see.
Thor is available to stream on Disney+. Marvel Studios is also hard at work preparing Thor: Love and Thunder for release on May 6, 2022.
