When Will Mandalorian Season 3 Release? New Report Points to Likely Premiere Window

The Mandalorian, Disney+, Ahsoka

While Marvel fans have enjoyed a bounty of Disney+ series - and now films - throughout 2021, Star Wars fans haven't been quite as fortunate.

Following The Mandalorian's internet-breaking Season 2 finale last December, the only other content from that galaxy far, far away to date has been the new animated series Star Wars: The Bad Batch

While it's true that a new anime series - Star Wars: Visions - is on the way along with a return to live-action in The Book of Boba Fett this December, the lull in content coupled with a year without Mando has left fans wondering when Season 3 will arrive in this galaxy.

Now that Obi-Wan Kenobi has wrapped, news about The Mandalorian's Season 3 shooting schedule may hold the answer to when audiences can expect Mando's return.

The Mandalorian's Season 3 Debut in Late 2022?

Bespin Bulletin corroborated a report that The Mandalorian's third season will begin filming on September 20 with the goal of wrapping in March 2022; this aligns with supporting series actor and director Carl Weathers' claim of a September start date for shooting

Considering the hit series' sophomore season wrapped in March 2020 before premiering on Disney+ on October 30, 2020, it's likely that Mando's third season could release in late 2022.

The eleven-month span between the start of Season 2's shoot to its debut followed a similar timeline to that of Season 1, which began filming in October 2018 and then released in November 2019. That length of time added up to about thirteen months between the start date and air date.

Granted, the shoot for both Season 1 and Season 2 occurred before COVID-19 and without the current restrictions and precautions that have now become commonplace in the entertainment industry.

However, The Book of Boba Fett has also kept with The Mandalorian's prior schedule in that filming for it began in November 2020, and it's set to release in December of this year.

That thirteen-month duration is right in line with Mando's inaugural season.

The Book of Boba Fett Key to Mando Season 3

The announcement of The Book of Boba Fett as Lucasfilm's next live-action project came as a surprise following The Mandalorian's Season 2 finale.

In fact, it led to some speculating whether Mando and Grogu's story had, in fact, come to an end

Lucasfilm later confirmed that Mando's story would continue, especially since he's now in possession of the Darksaber. However, there is some evidence that points to his presence, and that of Baby Yoda's, in The Book of Boba Fett

As to the release of the anticipated third season of Mando, it certainly does appear that Lucasfilm is looking to keep to an established schedule, especially as it adds more series to its lineup such as Ahsoka with its possible ties to Star Wars Rebels storytelling.

And, while COVID-19 has led to production shutdowns and delays in Hollywood, the use of the Volume Technology has allowed Lucasfilm projects to move quickly and without the need for location shoots.

It's possible that many of the lingering questions about the future of the series will become clearer upon the release of The Book of Boba Fett come December.

After all, for a series that's set to debut in about two months, there's next to no information about the series and its story. Therefore, the ties between the two bounty hunting Mandalorians may be closer than fans originally suspected.

All episodes of Season 1 and 2 of The Mandalorian are streaming on Disney+.
