Marvel Studios' Spider-Man 4 Is Now In Development
Spider-Man’s presence in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is continuing its wildly successful run with December’s Spider-Man: No Way Home. Tickets for the threequel are already a hot commodity less than 24 hours after going on sale, and the hype for No Way Home is still chugging along at full speed as it has for more than a year.
Even beyond No Way Home, it’s safe to say that Spider-Man’s presence in the MCU is an overwhelming success. Tom Holland has excelled as the young web-slinger in two solo Spider-Man movies and three team-up efforts over the last five years, and his efforts in No Way Home already look to be something special too.
The big question that remains now is if Holland’s run as Peter Parker will end with just a solo trilogy or if Spider-Man is in for more stories within the MCU. Not only is there good news for MCU fans on that front, but it also appears to be even more immediate than expected.
More MCU Spider-Man After No Way Home
Former Sony executive Amy Pascal confirmed with Fandango that the studio is already working with Marvel Studios on Spider-Man 4 within the MCU. Pascal has served as an executive producer on all three MCU Spider-Man movies to date, including December's Spider-Man: No Way Home.
While the fourth movie has no timeline for production or release, Pascal definitively stated that it's in development, with Tom Holland returning to the leading role:
"We are getting ready to make the next Spider-Man movie with Tom Holland and Marvel..."
No End In Sight for MCU Spider-Man
Even with Marvel and Sony already set for what will likely be the biggest superhero movie of the year in Spider-Man: No Way Home, it appears that the webslinger's time in the MCU is far from over. The same report already confirmed that as many as three more solo Spider-Man movies are in the works, meaning Spidey's place next to the Avengers and more is seemingly set in stone for some time.
Should this come to fruition, this would be the first time any iteration of Spider-Man has seen a fourth solo outing in any franchise, which is exciting in and of itself. What the MCU could do with a fourth solo movie is still completely up in the air considering everything that's still set to blow the MCU apart in No Way Home, but the fact that it's in development is the only thing that matters to MCU fans.
Sony and Marvel's relationship with Spider-Man has been through its ups and downs in recent years, most notably when the hero nearly left the MCU entirely after negotiations took a bad turn in 2019. It now seems that this has been rectified in a big way, and once the third solo movie releases at the end of the year, speculation about what will happen next will surely run rampant.
Spider-Man: No Way Home will release in theaters on December 17, 2021, and the fourth solo movie is in the early stages of development.
