Spider-Man: Miles Morales Live-Action Movie Rumored to Be In Sony's Sights
Tom Holland's Spider-Man is quickly becoming a cornerstone piece for Marvel Studios and the MCU. The world has fallen in love with the young actor's web-slinger as mainstays like Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans passed the proverbial MCU torch his way.
Holland's next adventure in the suit is easily his most anticipated. Spider-Man: No Way Home swings into theaters in just a couple of weeks, so the web-head's world is on everyone's mind. The multiversal epic is the last film in Tom Holland's current deal, and though it looks likely that he will sign on for even more movies, he has made mention of wanting to help usher in a new Spidey eventually.
On the comics' pages, Peter Parker is succeeded by Brooklyn-born teen Miles Morales after the original Spider-Man dies. And it seems that Miles could be next on the docket for a jump to live-action.
Miles Swings into the Picture
According to a Patreon post from known insider Daniel Richtman, Sony is exploring the prospect of a "Miles [Morales] live-action solo" movie, existing in "a different universe ala Venom."
"Sony is interested in doing a Miles live action solo. And there are discussing if to make it in a different universe ala Venom."
A Black Spider-Man is Going to Happen
Sony would be foolish to not be exploring a future in which Miles gets his own live-action movie. Young Mr. Morales has quickly become beloved among comic readers and is starting to permeate the general consciousness as well.
He headlined the animated hit movie Spider-Man: Into the Spiderverse, and has made a name for himself on the digital front by playing a big part in Insomniac Games' Spider-Man series.
The black and red suit is becoming as well-known and loved as the red and blue of Peter Parker. Miles means a lot to a great many people, so from a business standpoint, why wouldn't Sony want to explore that on screen?
As for the separate universe aspect from this finely-spun web, that may not be the best idea. Thus far, the separate Spidey universe strategy has yielded middling results for Sony. Sure, both the Venom films were financial successes, but they were both critically reviled.
The smartest thing to do here would be to wait on this idea. Let Tom Holland bang out a few more solo Spidey films, letting the MCU Pete grow up a bit and experience life as an adult wall-crawler, then introduce Miles into that universe. Think of the emotional impact of seeing Holland pass the metaphorical web-shooter to Miles, as both he and the audience say goodbye to this iteration of Spider-Man.
Of course, that prospect would require some Marvel Studios-levels of forward-thinking on Sony's part. But if they can hold out, this may be a case of holding a dime now to make a dime later.
In the meantime, fans will get their Spidey fix when Spider-Man: No Way Home hits theaters on December 17, 2021.
