Spider-Man: No Way Home Theory Explains Jaime Foxx Electro's Confusing Trailer Line

Jamie Foxx Electro Spider-Man No Way Home

Spider-Man: No Way Home is set to showcase the return of non-MCU villains from previous Spider-Man films, and one of them is Jamie Foxx's Electro.

Foxx's involvement in No Way Home kickstarted the rumors that the threequel would be about the Multiverse, mainly because his casting was the first one that was reported by several outlets.

Amidst the reports, the veteran actor dialed up more hype about his casting by confirming the news on social media, with him teasing the inclusions of Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield by showing a graphic of three Spider-Men. However, Foxx quickly deleted the post, leaving many to wonder if it was real or not.

In a recent interview, Spider-Man star Tom Holland finally put the speculation to rest when he confirmed Foxx's appearance as Electro in No Way Home. The second trailer supported Holland's statement, with it showing the actor in all his electrifying glory.

In the latest footage, Electro had a line that spawned fan questions and theories online.

At the 2:00 mark of the trailer, Electro tells someone, "You're not gonna take this away from me." It is unknown which character is the recipient of his outburst and what the villain is pertaining to in terms of taking something away from him.

Let's discuss all the variables.

Electro's Role in The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (Recap)

Foxx made his Marvel debut during 2014's The Amazing Spider-Man 2, playing an Oscorp employee named Max Dillon who later becomes the villainous Electro.

Dillon was an electrical engineer at Oscorp who gained his powers after falling into a tank of genetically-engineered electric eels. The character is also a huge fan of Spider-Man in the movie.

Dillon eventually turned on the webslinger after a fateful encounter in Times Square, thus leading to an intense clash in the film's climactic battle. With the help of Gwen Stacy, Peter Parker was able to use Electro's powers against him, overloading his body with energy that led to his apparent demise.

Foxx is featured several times in the latest trailer, with him fighting Holland's Marvel hero. Given that Electro died during the events of The Amazing Spider-Man 2, many have been speculating on how the villain made his vengeful comeback in No Way Home

There's a strong chance that this Electro is plucked out of his timeline right before his overcharged death during the Andrew Garfield-led sequel. If so, then the villain would've instantly escaped death.

This would mean that he would be transported directly to the MCU, and his upgrades could've been a result of either the Multiversal spell or him boosting his charge through obtaining more energy in power grids within the vicinity.

There is already evidence that this seems to be the case. In the trailer, Peter goes up against Electro while wearing his Black and Gold suit inside a power plant.

By looking closely at the image above, it appears that Foxx is still sporting his The Amazing Spider-Man 2 design during this moment, and he can be seen charging his body. it's possible that this could be the key to his upgrade, thus explaining his instant shift to his human form and yellow lightning.

Electro's Confusing Trailer Line Explained

"You're not gonna take this away from me."

Electro is hellbent on revenge in No Way Home, and it seems that he will not give up his newfound upgrade without a fight.

It's possible that the Marvel villain is talking to Tom Holland's web-slinger in the scene. This seems likely, since Holland's Peter Parker is partly responsible for Electro's inclusion in the MCU.

Peter's plan during No Way Home's climactic battle could be to transport the villains back into the respective universes, and as expected, Electro opposes the idea. This could eventually lead to the fateful showdown that was featured in the trailer, with the MCU's Spider-Man going all-out against Electro, Lizard, and Sandman.

Alfred Molina as Doctor Octopus
Marvel Studios

There is also a chance that Electro is talking to Alfred Molina's Doctor Octopus, as evidenced by footage from the trailer. Right after Electro uttered the line above, a shot of Octavius being blasted by a bolt of lightning was showcased.

This could hint that Doctor Octopus eventually sided with Peter during the final battle, helping the hero to restore the villains to their worlds. If the line is directed to Octavius, Electro could still be referring to his power upgrade, with him choosing to stay in the MCU instead of going back to his world.

Another possibility is Andrew Garfield's Spider-Man, mainly due to the established connection between him and Electro. Upon seeing Garfield's webslinger, Electro could be triggered since he is the one responsible for his death. If it is, then the character's confusing line could be referring to his second chance at life.

If Electro is transferred to the MCU before his death, it is possible that the villain will be informed of his demise, thus fueling more anger directed at Spider-Man. On the flip side, if this Electro is from another universe, then the line could refer to his powerful upgrade.

Fans will find out for sure when Spider-Man: No Way Home premieres in theaters on December 17, 2021.
