It's official. The long-awaited second trailer for Spider-Man: No Way Home has finally arrived ahead of its December 17, 2021 release.

At this point, there's no doubt that the threequel is destined to be one of the biggest film events of all time considering its first trailer shattered records and due to the unprecedented demand for additional news and content

Fortunately, it looks like the second trailer was well worth the wait! In addition to new villain reveals, revealing Doctor Strange dialogue, and more of Tom Holland's Spidey in action, fans also saw glimpses of an epic battle atop a familiar landmark that looks a little different in this upcoming film.

Spider-Man: No Way Home's Captain America Easter Egg

The new trailer shows Tom Holland's Spider-Man battling the film's roster of villains atop the Statue of Liberty. However, in these new scenes, Lady Liberty is surrounded by scaffolding and appears to be wielding Cap's iconic shield!

In addition to footage of Holland's Spidey swinging past a massive, copper-colored shield, another shot shows the massive shield falling and tearing through layers of scaffolding.

Earlier this year, a photo from The New Way Home set showed a Queens bus stop with a poster of Lady Liberty holding the classic Captain America shield with text that read, "Meet NYC's Newest (and tallest) Avenger," along with a social media hashtag of #MyLibertyAvenger. In addition, well-known scooper Charles Murphy also confirmed that this modified Statue of Liberty would be part of an important scene in the film.

Considering Lady Liberty is also copper-colored like the shield, as opposed to its current shade of oxidized green in our universe, it implies that New York truly doesn't just have a new Avenger, but either a new or refurbished statue in No Way Home and one that reflects Captain America and the Avengers.

The trailer also shows that Murphy was correct about how important this scene would be since it includes most of the film's villains, as well as Peter's best friend Ned and girlfriend MJ.

The final scene of the trailer also shows Benedict Cumberbatch's Doctor Strange standing atop the statue's torch as the sky lights up with purple, multiversal streaks.

Lady Liberty Wields the Shield

At this point in the MCU, Steve Rogers' Captain America has given the shield to Sam Wilson, who came to embrace his new title and the shield in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier on Disney+.

Although, during The Falcon and the Winter Soldier's run, the public's attention was focused on the government-selected John Walker as the new Captain America and theories about where Roger's Cap had gone, one of which included the moon.

Therefore, a "Cap Craze" makes sense for this particular time within the MCU, especially since Steve Rogers hailed from Brooklynn. Still, it's unknown just to which Captain America the new Lady Liberty is paying tribute.

It's also worth noting that this integral No Way Home location isn't the only ode to Cap's shield that Marvel fans have seen lately. The first trailer for Eternals featured an early version of the iconic shield, Captain America's original shield from Captain America: The First Avenger, and even a reference to Steve Rogers himself.

While the details surrounding the Avengers-style makeover of this American icon is a mystery, it looks to be an epic location - and one that's truly New York - for No Way Home's climactic battle and possibly Holland's Peter Parker's ultimate test.

Spider-Man: No Way Home swings into theaters on December 17, 2021.
