Brie Larson's Captain Marvel Teased In New Ms. Marvel Disney+ Plot Synopsis
Iman Vellani's MCU debut as Kamala Khan is just around the corner, as the Ms. Marvel official trailer has been released by Disney+ and Marvel Studios. This coming-of-age story welcomes a fresh face to Marvel's universe of heroes and promises to tell a small story with cosmic power.
Ms. Marvel will be Marvel Studios' seventh television show to stream on Disney+. It is set to premiere on June 8, roughly a month after Oscar Isaac's Moon Knight will air its final episode.
Kamala Khan was first introduced in 2013, fives years after the MCU began with 2008's Iron Man. This relatively new hero promises to give audiences a new perspective on the MCU: a fan. Tom Holland's Peter Parker is a close comparison, but in this case, audiences will see Khan be a super fan, then become a hero.
Khan became the first Muslim character in Marvel Comics to have their own comic in 2014. The TV show will continue with that representation while featuring some new superpowers that differ from the comics. Marvel Studios is saving the elongation for Reed Richards and focusing on a more cosmic powerset, similar to another hero fans already know.
One element of the series that was in question was Captain Marvel's involvement in the narrative, but Disney has now hinted towards Carol Danvers' effect on the upcoming show.
Captain Marvel Teased in Ms. Marvel's Plot
A key part of Kamala Khan is her love for Carol Danvers' Captain Marvel. The official plot synopsis released by Disney for Ms. Marvel specifically namedrops the off-world hero, teasing her impact on the upcoming series: "...Kamala is a Super Hero mega fan with an oversized imagination—particularly when it comes to Captain Marvel."
There's no indication as to whether Brie Larson will make an appearance, but her character's presence will surely be felt and Vellani is set to star in 2023's The Marvels.
Here's the full synopsis:
Marvel Studios’ “Ms. Marvel” is a new, original series that introduces Kamala Khan, a Muslim American teenager growing up in Jersey City. An avid gamer and a voracious fan-fiction scribe, Kamala is a Super Hero mega fan with an oversized imagination—particularly when it comes to Captain Marvel. Yet Kamala feels like she doesn’t fit in at school and sometimes even at home—that is, until she gets super powers like the heroes she’s always looked up to. Life gets better with super powers, right?
Iman Vellani stars as Kamala Khan aka Ms. Marvel. The cast also includes Aramis Knight, Saagar Shaikh, Rish Shah, Zenobia Shroff, Mohan Kapur, Matt Lintz, Yasmeen Fletcher, Laith Nakli, Azhar Usman, Travina Springer and Nimra Bucha.
Ms. Marvel Setting Up The Marvels
During Disney Investor Day in 2020, Kevin Feige announced that Iman Vellani's Kamala Khan would star in The Marvels (then called Captain Marvel 2). From that point on, it became clear that Marvel was using this Disney+ origin story to set the character up for a big-screen future.
During WandaVision, Teyonah Parris' Monica Rambeau gets her powers from Wanda Maximoff's Hex barrier. Parris is also confirmed to co-star in The Marvels alongside Brie Larson.
Captain Marvel is the only well-known "Marvel" at the beginning of Ms. Marvel, recognized for being an Avenger and helping snap back all of those that blipped away. It is unclear whether Khan blipped away for five years, or how she was affected if not.
What is clear in the official trailer is that Kamala looks up to Carol Danvers' Captain Marvel and wishes she could fly amongst the stars alongside her. These new abilities teased in the trailer may be a part of a greater plan for her future appearances in the MCU and how her powers could work off-world.
Will Brie Larson appear in Ms. Marvel? Find out when the series begins streaming exclusively on Disney+ June 8.
