Marvel Confirms 6 MCU Movies & Shows Coming In 2022
After taking a break in 2020 due to the pandemic, Marvel Studios has been on a roll ever since as it introduced a plethora of new projects and characters along the way. 2021 paved the way for the MCU's small screen branch, showcasing live-action offerings, namely WandaVision, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Loki, and Hawkeye. It also delivered stellar big-screen projects with the debut of Black Widow, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, Eternals, and ultimately, Spider-Man: No Way Home.
Even after featuring a total of nine projects in 2021 (What If...? included), Marvel Studios isn't hitting the pause button anytime soon as it is poised to introduce more content in 2022. Initially, Secret Invasion was intended to join the MCU's slate for the year, but signs point to the Samuel L. Jackson-led show premiering in 2023 instead.
What If...? Season 2 was also originally planned to join Secret Invasion in 2023, but it has been confirmed that the animated series will premiere on Disney+ sometime this year.
Now, Marvel Studios' full 2022 slate has been showcased at a recent event.
Marvel Highlights 2022's MCU Slate
During a special event in Thailand, Marvel officially confirmed "all six" live-action MCU movies and original series slated to premiere in 2022.
The MCU films that will take center stage on the big screen are Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness in May, Thor: Love and Thunder in July, and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever in November.
Meanwhile, Disney+ will introduce new MCU heroes into the fold as it welcomes Oscar Isaac's Moon Knight on March 30, Iman Vellani's Ms. Marvel on June 8, and Tatiana Maslany's She-Hulk sometime this year.
"Welcoming all six movies and original series in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) in 2022, including three sequels coming to theaters: Marvel Studios' Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Marvel Studios' Thor: Love and Thunder, and Marvel Studios' Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. Disney+ Hotstar will introduce three new superhero titles: Marvel Studios' Moon Knight, Marvel Studios' Ms. Marvel, and Marvel Studios' She-Hulk, which fans will be looking forward to all year long.
More Marvel Projects On the Way
Many would agree that Marvel Studios has an exciting slate in 2022 since it has a mix of new and returning characters from the franchise.
Based on the current lineup, Multiverse of Madness is expected to have major ramifications across the MCU due to its focus on the concept of alternate realities. Love and Thunder will let fans learn more about the titular Asgardian's cosmic adventure while also showcasing Jane Foster's transition into Mighty Thor.
Wrapping up the big screen entries will be Wakanda Forever. The upcoming sequel is expected to pay tribute to the late Chadwick Boseman while also setting a huge future as it is rumored to introduce Namor and the hidden city of Atlantis to the MCU.
As for the small screen, Isaac revealed that Moon Knight is the MCU's first "legitimate character-study" since Robert Downey Jr.'s Iron Man while also expanding the universe by introducing Egyptian mythology.
Ms. Marvel will allow fans to explore another young hero while also discovering more of Carol Danvers' time on Earth. In addition, She-Hulk is rumored to tap into "breaking the fourth wall" elements while also uncovering more Hulk-related secrets.
A notable omission from the slate is James Gunn's The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special, which has already been confirmed to premiere this December. However, this could simply be a minor mistake, especially considering that this announcement came from an international branch of Marvel.
Moon Knight will begin the MCU's 2022 slate when it premieres on Disney+ on March 30.
