Tom Holland's Spider-Man 3 Receives Short-Term Title at Marvel Studios
The Marvel Cinematic Universe is less than a week away from kicking off the first of 25 confirmed projects over the next three years as Phase 4 finally arrives to the world. This year alone will bring six mini-series premiering on Disney+, while four blockbuster movies make their way into theaters.
The spring and summer will bring origin stories for Eternals and Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, plus a prequel in Black Widow, and then Marvel Studios will team up with Sony Pictures for a third time to bring the untitled Spider-Man 3 at the end of 2021. The rumors surrounding this movie tease undoubtedly the most massive live-action Spider-Man movie ever put to screen, as Tom Holland's young hero teams up with Benedict Cumberbatch's Doctor Strange to tackle the MCU multiverse.
Setting aside all the news and casting that has come in rumors for this movie, one aspect that has flown relatively under the radar is its title. While this still continues to be the case, Marvel's fearless leader offered the smallest of teases for this unknown name.
NEWS
During a press interview for Disney+'s WandaVision with ComicBook.com, Marvel Studios CCO Kevin Feige revealed that he is still amazed at the fact that the third Spider-Man movie in the MCU is becoming a reality. He also teased how important the multiverse will be in this movie, especially since it directly ties in with Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness:
The biggest clue is the title of the second Doctor Strange movie. That's the biggest clue of where the Multiverse of Madness is taking us and how we're exploring that. It's surreal to me that we're talking about a Spider-Man 3. I worked on a movie called Spider-Man 3 many years ago directed by Mr. Sam Raimi. So this clearly, the shorthand of calling it Spider-Man 3 now, it's fine.
Feige revealed the shorthand title that the team is using for Spider-Man 3, but he also confirmed that the real title of this movie is not what it's commonly called right now:
"We call it Homecoming 3. It's not Spider-Man 3,"
WHAT THIS MEANS
Even though Kevin Feige clearly hears the rumors and cries of MCU fans, he remains firmly steadfast in terms of keeping the title of this movie a secret.
This isn't the first time that Feige and Marvel Studios have taken this approach, as they famously held the title of the fourth Avengers movie close to the vest for over a year. The title wasn't revealed to be Avengers: Endgame until the first trailer for the movie released in December 2018.
Spider-Man 3 is confirmed to be tackling the multiverse, which will likely be an indirect continuation from the plot of WandaVision on Disney+. Tom Holland's third solo movie will see him fighting Jamie Foxx's Electro from the Andrew Garfield-led series and Alfred Molina's Doctor Octopus from the Tobey Maguire-led trilogy, and with rumors of more multiverse-based appearances, it wouldn't come as a shock to see the multiverse work its way into the title.
It's also important to consider that Amy Pascal confirmed that the title of Spider-Man 3 will include the word "home" in it, just as 2017's Homecoming and 2019's Far From Home did. Feige and his team using the title "Homecoming 3" for now likely is just an indicator that this is the third MCU Spider-Man movie, but it doesn't take away any anticipation as the fandom waits for word on the real title.
The untitled Spider-Man 3 is currently filming, and it's scheduled to release in theaters on December 17, 2021.
