Margot Robbie & James Gunn Discussing Another Harley Quinn-Involved Project

Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, James Gunn

The Suicide Squad is poised to introduce a brand new version of Task Force X, but a few holdovers from the first team-up film back in 2016 will still be featured. It's no secret that one of the clear standouts from the previous version is Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn, and it is likely that the character will steal the show once again.

After saving the world from the Enchantress in David Ayer's Suicide Squad, the popularity of Harley rose to greater heights, thus paving the way for the anti-hero to return in her own film, Birds of Prey. While the pandemic derailed the box-office returns of the DC entry, the general response towards the project was mostly positive.

As a result, the anticipation surrounding another Harley Quinn-inspired project became evident, but plans are still unclear due to the ongoing health crisis. Despite that, a recent tidbit may have offered hope that the anti-hero will return sooner rather than later.

ANOTHER HARLEY QUINN PROJECT ON THE HORIZON?

In a Q&A session from Instagram, The Suicide Squad director James Gunn was asked if he is still willing to work with Margot Robbie in the future, potentially continuing the actress's version of Harley Quinn in another project.

The outspoken director responded by revealing that he already discussed the idea with the actress “the other day,” teasing fans that “[they] will have to see what happens.”

BIRDS OF PREY SEQUEL INCOMING?

On the surface, this is a huge tease from Gunn, further proving that the working relationship between the pair was strong while filming The Suicide Squad. Interestingly, this isn't the first time that the Guardians of the Galaxy director praised Robbie's performance as the Batman villain.

In a previous social media post, Gunn shared that Robbie is “probably the best actor” that he's ever worked with in the industry. That said, the duo's reunion in a future DC film (or series) will definitely do wonders, and this bodes well for both the franchise and the Harley Quinn persona.

If Harley does return, there are numerous possibilities for the character moving forward. Given that it is somewhat unlikely that the anti-hero will die in The Suicide Squad, it's possible that the sequel to the 2021 film will do a deep dive into Harley's past, thus reuniting the remaining members of Task Force X.

On the flip side, not much is known if a Birds of Prey sequel will be receiving the green light from Warner Bros., but the renewed interest for Harley combined with Gunn's narrative direction could be more than enough to convince studio executives to give the film another shot.

Considering the importance of HBO Max in the future of the DCEU, as evidenced by the Peacemaker series led by John Cena, there's a good chance that a Harley Quinn-centric series will be considered. It would certainly provide a unique opportunity for Robbie to explore the character even more by utilizing a long-form storytelling approach.

Overall, it's clear that the future of Harley Quinn is bright, and it will be interesting to witness how it will unfold.
