WandaVision: Monica Rambeau Originally Had Surprise Introduction
Even as excitement around the premiere season of WandaVision fades, key pieces of the series are set to play a significant role in the future of the MCU. For one thing, the main antagonists of the show seem likely to return in the future.
The post-credit scenes in the Disney+ series also tease some pretty interesting directions for the future of the MCU, including further interactions with the Skrulls and a brewing magical conflict.
In addition, some characters from the project have already been confirmed as appearing down the line in Marvel's slate. Notable among these is Teyonah Parris, who is set to reprise her role as Monica Rambeau in Captain Marvel 2.
TRUSTING THE TEAM AT MARVEL
Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, WandaVision's creator, Jac Schaeffer, touched on the reveal of Teyonah Parris's casting, as well as her future in the MCU. Responding to a question about the possibility of announcing Parris as Geraldine instead of Rambeau, Schaeffer complimented Disney's skillful publicity work, while also commenting on the initial "surprise" approach to the introduction of the character:
"Yeah, Teyonah [as Monica Rambeau] was announced at Comic-Con 2019, I think, and I'm pretty sure we were breaking the outlines and writing as though it would be a surprise. But Marvel and Disney have incredible strategy when it comes to the PR side of things. They're so smart, and they know how much to give and how much to hold back. So when that dropped, the jig was up. In the linear watch of the show, when she first appears, she's referred to as Geraldine. So it ended up being the opposite of what we intended, and people were like, "Geraldine? But she's Monica Rambeau!" So that ended up being a fun reversal."
Schaeffer lastly expressed trust in the other creators at Marvel, commenting that " the people who are involved in making Captain Marvel 2 are terrific storytellers, and Teyonah is an incredible guardian for this character."
FAITH IN THE MCU FUTURE
Schaeffer's comments on her time developing the series are quite interesting, especially as they relate to the decisions made by the publicity side of Marvel. It is worth considering that as the PR train chugs on, some smaller ideas get left in the dust, something that may happen more often than fans would imagine.
Additionally, even as Schaeffer relinquishes control over the character of Monica Rambeau, it is good to hear her high levels of confidence in the story Marvel will deliver. The character clearly has an interesting road ahead, as WandaVision set up both a deep-seated emotional conflict and a number of as yet untested superpowers.
Even so, there will still be some crossover between the creative team on WandaVision and the upcoming Captain Marvel 2. Megan McDonnell, a writer for the mind-bending Disney+ series, is set to pen the script for the sequel to Carol Danvers' cosmic adventure.
Fans worried about the future of Monica Rambeau can rest easy knowing that Schaeffer is confident in the character's path from this point on.
