Spider-Man Theory Reveals Why Jaime Foxx's Electro Is Now Yellow In MCU's No Way Home

It finally happened. The long-awaited second trailer for Spider-Man: No Way Home has finally dropped, offering fans new footage and insight into Tom Holland's multiversal threequel.

While the biggest mystery surrounding the film is whether Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield's former web-slingers will appear alongside Holland, fans have been equally intrigued by the return of villains from those franchises' past.

Even though Doc Ock's Alfred Molina has said his villain's No Way Home tale begins as he's drowning in the river in Spider-Man 2, no one yet knows how Willem Dafoe's Green Goblin - who died before Ock's rise in the Tobey Maguire Spidey sequel, is alive in this upcoming film.

Still, timing isn't the only question that has fans scratching their heads. There's also the issue of changes that have been made to No Way Home's rogues gallery of baddies, particularly Jamie Foxx's Electro from The Amazing Spider-Man 2; but now, there may be an answer to that.

Was Electro Already Evolving in The Amazing Spider-Man 2?

In 2014's The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Foxx played Oscorp electrical engineer - and Spider-Man fan - Max Dillon who, through a work-related accident, became a human electrical battery with electrical powers.

In the film, Foxx's Electro was a glowing, almost translucent blue who used blue jolts of electricity against Garfield's Spider-Man and anyone who opposed him. However, when Foxx let it slip that his character was returning for No Way Home, he also shocked fans by admitting that this time around, Electro was going to be yellow.

In promotional material for No Way Home, fans have seen Electro's yellow bolts of electricity; and in the new trailer, he's clearly visible and seemingly human with a look that's more in line with Electro from Marvel comics. But still, the question is how and why Foxx's villain received a color change for his MCU debut.

While some theories suggest that No Way Home's villains could be variants of the baddies from prior franchises, there is something else to consider.

Despite Foxx's Electro being dominantly blue in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, he did manifest other colors from time to time, especially towards the latter half of the film.

One of the best examples of this is when Harry Osborn breaks Electro out of the Ravencroft Institute. Feeding off of electricity, Electro evolves into a stronger - and eventually more realized - version of his post-accident self with yellow and orange charges flickering through him.

Another instance of Electro's yellow and orange hues can be seen during his final battle against Garfield's Spidey, where it looks like his character has evolved even more.

The last we see of Electro in the film is when Spider-Man and Gwen Stacy defeat him with power from New York City's electromagnetic power grid. Interestingly enough, that power happened to be yellow and orange.

Why Is Electro Yellow In Spider-Man: No Way Home?

While Marvel and Sony's decision to have Electro change colors for No Way Home seems surprising, it's possible that it's part of the explanation for how he's able to return.

Even though The Amazing Spider-Man 2 implied that Electro was defeated by a great power source, perhaps he only evolved into that stronger source. After all, he was capable of functioning as pure energy before, which then led to a more solid form of himself later on.

Also, the second trailer mainly showed him near power lines and electrical grids, which is where he started and seemingly ended in his debut film.

While the new trailer for Spider-Man: No Way Home provided fans with new footage and the fans' first look at Electro in the MCU, there are still plenty of questions the film has left to answer when it debuts in theaters, including the why behind Foxx's Electro.

Spider-Man: No Way Home swings into theaters on December 17, 2021.
