Marvel Studios Producer Teases Big Future For Sharon Carter's Power Broker
Marvel Studios' venture into storytelling through Disney+ is quickly turning into an overwhelming success, starting with WandaVision and continuing with The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. The latter of the two took fans back to the grounded world after Avengers: Endgame, putting Bucky Barnes into the real world with his mind restored while pitting Sam Wilson on his journey to become Captain America.
The heroic duo faced their fair share of adversaries throughout the course of this show's six episodes, including the likes of U.S. Agent and the villainous Flag Smashers. In an even higher place of power stands the ever-elusive Power Broker, who was revealed to be Emily VanCamp's Sharon Carter in the final episode after pulling all the strings up to that point in time.
Looking to the future of the MCU, it's becoming clearer that this new deceitful version of Sharon may be in for the long run...
A LARGER ROLE FOR THE POWER BROKER?
In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier co-executive producer Zoie Nagelhout teased the eventual return of Sharon Carter, potentially in the recently announced Captain America 4.
Nagelhout reportedly confirmed that there's a desire to grow the role of Carter's Power Broker in future Marvel Cinematic Universe projects.
Nagelhout hopes that the Power Broker's story will continue with Sharon being "such an interesting character." Taking on a character with "a point of view that has changed" and who now has "a very interesting duality in her," the producer seems optimistic that this new direction will be an interesting one for Agent 13:
"I really hope so. I think she's such an interesting character. It felt like, in a story where we're dissecting the shield and that legacy, to have a character come in with a point of view that has changed…that has created a very interesting duality in her. I don't think she's all bad, I don't think she's all good. I think she lives in a middle ground that is really compelling. To get to explore that character further and what shades of gray she might drift between could be really interesting."
A NEW FORCE TO BE RECKONED WITH
Sharon Carter's development into the Power Broker was teased as early as her first appearance in Episode 3 of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. She had become completely disillusioned by the idea of superheroes and the Avengers after being forced to live in hiding for a year, and it was taking a toll on her as she had to make a new life for herself in the hidden country of Madripoor.
This transition went so deep for her that she became the very person that she described as running the entire criminal underworld of Madripoor in the Power Broker. Her story came to a head in Episode 6 when she spoke to Karli Morgenthau about training her to do something truly special, but even the leader of the Flag Smashers seemed to not be fully on board with the kind of chaos Sharon was preparing to unleash.
After restoring her status as an agent in the U.S. government, Sharon's phone call in the finale's mid-credits scene confirmed that she is far from done with her sketchy behavior as the Power Broker.
Where she pops up next remains to be seen, with a good chance it could be in Anthony Mackie's Captain America 4. Regardless of this timeline, it's becoming evident that this villainous turn has the chance to be a consistent factor for the foreseeable future
All six episodes of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier are now available to stream on Disney+.
