Wyatt Russell Comments on US Agent's Future After Falcon and the Winter Soldier
Fan theories have run wild since Julia Louis-Dreyfus appeared as Contessa Valentina Allegra de Fontaine in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier episode, “Truth.” Especially regarding her intentions for John Walker and whether they involve joining a government-sponsored Avengers team or The Thunderbolts.
Before the finale, Wyatt Russell discussed his desire to work with Julia Louis-Dreyfus again in the future. Russel said, at the time, “I think people are going to think one thing and get a little bit of another,” which turned out to be about his debut as US Agent in the final episode.
In a more recent interview, while Russel is still excited as ever for the role, he isn't sure when he'll turn up next.
UNCERTAIN FUTURE OF JOHN WALKER
Speaking with Vanity Fair, Wyatt Russell spoke about what fans should expect from John Walker. Russell is hoping that, by the end of this series, fans will “understand why he’s doing it” when Walker agreed to Contessa's terms:
“Hopefully you were taken from someone who you really are set up to despise down the journey of understanding where he came from. Whether or not you like it or agree with it, you’re going to understand why he’s doing it.”
Although, despite John Walker's future as US Agent, Russell doesn't seem entirely sure when or if Walker will return, as “Part of the way I approached Marvel was it’s all your last time you’re going to do it.”
Fans have only theorized where Walker will end up, but wherever that is, Russell doesn't know, but that Marvel “[doesn’t] make decisions before they see what works,” making Walker's return depend on audience reception:
“Marvel operates in a really cool way where they don’t make decisions before they see what works. I’m not a part of any of this decision making, obviously.”
Finally, Russell described that Walker has “grown into himself in a very dangerous way” by the end of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.
WHEN WILL US AGENT RETURN?
It's encouraging to see that John Walker's flaws weren't simply resolved in the finale when he chose to save the senators over seeking revenge. As Russell put it in his last interview when talking about Walker, “They've used him, and he feels used, and doesn't feel understood.” Hopefully, wherever Walker ends up next, it will continue developing him as a character and his inner conflicts.
As for Walker's return depending on audience feedback, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige seemed to have been strangely delighted with the negative feedback Russel received from fans upon his introduction in the series. So, that, at the very least, is encouraging for Russell's future in this huge franchise.
