Green Lantern: HBO Max Taps Superman & Lois Director Lee Toland Krieger For Pilot (Exclusive)
After Green Lantern teases in the world of the Arrowverse and appearances in the Snyder Cut, the space-faring superheroes are finally getting their own series on HBO Max.
Multiple Green Lanterns will share the screen in this incarnation, with Guy Gardner, Alan Scott, and a new female hero named Bree Jarta joining forces. The motormouth Guy Gardner will be portrayed by American Horror Story actor Finn Wittrock, while Jay Ervine is confirmed to play the Golden Age Green Lantern Alan Scott.
Scott's Golden Age history will seemingly come into play, as his storyline will take place in the 1940s while Gardner and Jarta's occurs 40 years later. The trio will not be alone though, as fellow Green Lantern Sinestro is rumored to make an appearance in the series.
Seth Grahame-Smith will act as showrunner, with his background in the horror genre preparing him for the mature content and creepy-looking villains that the series will introduce.
Now, another key personnel behind the camera has been hired to set the series off on the right foot...
GREEN LANTERN SERIES FINDS ONE OF ITS DIRECTORS
HBO Max has tapped Lee Toland Krieger to direct multiple episodes of the upcoming Green Lantern series, including its pilot, The Direct has exclusively learned.
Berlanti Productions is producing Green Lantern in association with DC Comics, and Krieger has developed a rapport with the Greg Berlanti-led studio in recent years. Since 2017, Krieger directed episodes for Riverdale, You, Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, Prodigal Son, and Superman & Lois, all of which were produced under the Berlanti banner.
Krieger most recently directed the opening two episodes of Netflix's critically lauded Shadow and Bone. He also has experience with theatrical filmmaking, having helmed 2012's Celeste and Jesse Forever as well as 2015's The Age of Adaline starring Blake Lively and Harrison Ford.
Krieger is set to begin shooting Green Lantern's pilot episode in Los Angeles in September.
AN ESTABLISHED DC DIRECTOR
Lee Toland Krieger's involvement with the Green Lantern series is a fitting choice, considering the director's history with television and DC properties. Krieger previously directed the first two episodes of Superman & Lois, both of which received acclaim from fans and critics alike for the hopeful portrayal of the Man of Steel, compelling character drama, and unabashed comic book homages.
Judging by this, Krieger should be able to infuse many of the comic book elements that fans have been waiting to be adapted into the Green Lantern series, whilst also delivering on interesting interplay between the title characters. The success of Krieger's work directing the Superman & Lois' pilot also bodes well for the Lantern-focused show's own test run, so hopefully, the director is able to use his DC experience to his advantage later this year.
The DC television shows on The CW are quite different from what fans may expect from an HBO Max endeavor from the franchise in terms of tone and writing, so it will be interesting to see what aspects are carried over or left behind. Peacemaker seems to very much be a James Gunn joint, so it remains to be seen whether the Green Lantern show will be more in line with the CW style that Krieger is most familiar with or if it will be able to seek out its own identity on the HBO Max platform.
It is unknown how many of the ordered 10 episodes Krieger will direct, but it is reassuring to hear that the Green Lantern series is coming together.
