Doctor Strange 2 Star Teases How Powerful the MCU's America Chavez Is
A lot of focus has been placed on Elizabeth Olsen's Wanda Maximoff/The Scarlet Witch appearing in 2022's Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, but the sequel will also feature the addition of an all-new character to the MCU.
Following the trend WandaVision started of introducing characters from the Young Avengers, Miss America Chavez will debut in the Doctor Strange sequel, played by Xochitl Gomez (Baby-Sitters Club). The character, who first appeared in the comics in 2011, identifies as a lesbian and has the distinction of being the first Latin-American LGBTQ character to star in an ongoing series of Marvel Comics.
While in the comics Miss America has super-strength, superhuman durability, the ability to fly, and is able to kick open holes in reality, it remains to be seen what powers she'll have in the MCU. Her actress recently commented on how honored she was to get the role and hinted at how strong Miss America will be.
MISS AMERICA BRINGS STRENGTH TO THE MCU
Talking to Entertainment Tonight, Xochitl Gomez shared her feelings about getting picked to play the iconic character. "I can't even explain how honored I am that I was able to receive such a role, and that it was even out there," she said, "That, not only a Latina, but just a girl, a young girl, a superhero, and it means so much."
Gomez clearly feels at home in the role, as she notes that her superhero suit was "comfortable" for her. "I felt like this was perfect. That's what I felt. I felt perfect, and it just felt right,"
As for what Miss America brings to the MCU, Gomez is adamant that it's strength. Giving words to describe America Chavez, she said, "I find her powerful. Girl power, and I guess it's the same, but strong. I mean all those words, just strong."
MISS AMERICA IN THE MULTIVERSE OF MADNESS
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is the perfect film to introduce a character like America Chavez. Her ability set could be incredibly useful in dealing with whatever multiversal dangers Doctor Strange will face in the film.
In the comics, she was born in the Utopian Parallel, an alternate reality separate from normal space and time. A multiverse conflict is a perfect time to introduce a character from outside of normal reality. While there's no guarantee they'll follow this origin exactly in the film, there's certainly room to do so.
The concepts of the multiverse, time antics, and holes in reality are working their way into the MCU slowly but surely. By the time Miss America takes the stage in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, it's likely these themes will be in full swing. Those eager to see America Chavez in action will have to bide their time until she kicks her way into theaters on March 25, 2022.
