WandaVision Songwriter Wanted One More Song Inspired By Michael Jackson's Thriller
WandaVision successfully kicked off the massive Phase 4 slate of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, leaving fans with the major transformation of Elizabeth Olsen's Wanda Maximoff into the Scarlet Witch.
The series is a unique MCU entry since it leaned towards a sitcom format, mainly inspired by shows like The Brady Bunch and Malcolm in the Middle. Throughout its nine-episode run, it was revealed that the decision behind this style was due to Wanda's passion for television during her childhood.
WandaVision creator Jac Schaeffer further explained that Wanda is “creating the full picture of her idealized world” through the television signals of the Westview Hex. As a result, Westview became a full-blown production filled with theme songs, goofy introductions, and even laugh tracks.
One of the strong aspects of WandaVision is its music, and it seems that it would've been more entertaining if another twist made it to the final cut as revealed by a new interview.
WANDAVISION SONGWRITER OPENS UP ABOUT SONG CHOICES
In an interview with Rolling Stone, WandaVision songwriter Kristen Anderson-Lopez revealed that, while watching the series during the time of the viral sensation that was "Agatha All Along, she wished to include “some sort of “Thriller” moment” when Kathryn Hahn's Agatha Harkness had control of Westview:
“Looking back, I really wish we had pitched that when Agatha had control of the whole town, she made them do some sort of “Thriller” moment. If we had known the way the songs were going to hit, I think we would have wanted to have a big finale. But we had absolutely no idea.”
A SCENE INSPIRED BY MICHAEL JACKSON'S THRILLER?
Seeing a sequence inspired by Michael Jackson's “Thriller” would've been an added boost to WandaVision. The inclusion of this scene would fit Kristen Anderson-Lopez's comment about wanting to have a “big finale,” and it would've showcased a more bizarre final battle between Wanda Maximoff and Agatha Harkness.
WandaVision had a successful run on Disney+, and one of the main reasons behind it was its engaging music. From the catchy WandaVision theme from the first episode all the way to the classic “Agatha All Along,” the hit Marvel series had no shortage of songs that left a mark on many MCU fans.
The composers of WandaVision made sure that these songs fit in the actual narrative, and it's reasonable to assume that adding a Michael Jackson song would've been a welcome sight for fans.
It remains to be seen if “Thriller” was the only song left on the composers' wish list for WandaVision. It's possible that there are more tunes that the composers would've featured if given the chance.
Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige did tease a potential MCU future for the sitcom format, and there's a good chance that more timeless songs will be considered to be included in a possible re-run of this approach at some point.
All episodes of WandaVision are now streaming on Disney+.
