Avengers: Age of Ultron Receives a Tragic Twist In New Trailer for Marvel's What If

Marvel Avengers Age of Ultron

What If...? is inching closer to its Season 1 finale, and it looks like the closing episodes will showcase a team-up of multiversal proportions against a powerful threat.

The final moments of the show's latest episode confirmed the arrival of a much more dangerous Ultron. This version of Tony Stark's peacekeeping program made its presence felt by appearing alongside a horde of Ultron bots and an armor infused with Infinity Stones.

The AI villain first appeared during 2015's Avengers: Age of Ultron, and it was created by the combined efforts of Stark and Bruce Banner. In the Avengers sequel, Earth's Mightiest Heroes managed to defeat Ultron, but What If...? will provide an alternate take on that narrative.

Instead of being defeated by the Avengers, the upcoming episode will show the villain as the winner with an added prize in the form of the six Infinity Stones.

Now, a special look at the penultimate episode of What If...? has been revealed.

Ultron Obtains the Infinity Stones in What If...? Trailer

Entertainment Weekly officially revealed the trailer for the eighth episode of What If...?, showcasing an alternate reality where Ultron won against the Avengers while also obtaining the Infinity Stones.

Alongside the reveal, the outlet also shared an official still from the episode featuring Paul Bettany's Vision:

The premise of the episode was also revealed:

"In an attempt to put a suit of armor around the world, Tony Stark invented the artificial intelligence, Ultron.

It went rogue and gained the power of the Infinity Stones."

The upcoming episode's teaser managed to showcase the grim aftermath for the MCU with Ultron at the forefront. It remains to be seen how powerful this version of Ultron will be, but it's reasonable to assume that the addition of the Infinity Stones will make him all the more dangerous.

During Avengers: Age of Ultron, the AI villain's goal was to eradicate human life, but it seems that this version discovered the importance of the Infinity Stones. As a result of this discovery, Ultron's goal appears to have been dialed up even further.

Based on what's been revealed so far, it seems that this Ultron came from a different universe, and this episode will likely give fans a rundown of how it conquered the Avengers and gained the six Infinity Stones. That said, it would make narrative sense for Jeffrey Wright's the Watcher to interfere since Ultron's arrival would likely cause the multiverse to be destroyed.

This Ultron appears to be more formidable as it is confined within Vision's vibranium body alongside the six Infinity Stones. On top of that, the addition of Ultron bots could've proven too much to handle for Tony Stark and the rest of the Avengers.

Ultron's What If...? episode will be available to stream on Wednesday, September 29, 2021 on Disney+.
