The Mandalorian: Will Gina Carano Be Replaced By Lucy Lawless? Actress Reacts to Cara Dune Fan Casts
The Mandalorian has arguably been the biggest Star Wars project since Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Even more than that, it's been the most important, responsible for giving the franchise more steam after Star Wars: Rise of Skywalker sucked it all away.
The show introduced a lot of great new characters to the show, but one of the biggest was Gina Carano's Cara Dune. Shortly after The Mandalorian's second season finished airing, however, the actress was fired due to some questionable behavior on Twitter.
Some agreed with the choice, some didn't—what matters is that it happened, and Lucasfilm had no plans to recast the character; this didn't stop fans from trying to think of the best replacement, and many set their eyes on Lucy Lawless.
But what does the actress herself think about joining the Star Wars universe to replace one of the show's biggest faces?
Will Lucy Lawless Make It to Star Wars?
Lucy Lawless had the chance to sit down with Metro, where the actress was asked about all the fan castings of her replacing Gina Carano's Cara Dune in The Mandalorian.
Right off the bat, she revealed something surprising, saying that "[she] was already in discussions about something:"
"Well, to be honest with you, I was already in discussions about something on – it wasn’t The Mandalorian – something Star Wars-affiliated."
As great as that sounds, it doesn't have a happy ending. The actor revealed that those fan castings "might have hurt [her] in some way:"
"It might have hurt me in some way because then they couldn’t hire me because it would seem to be pandering to… I’m just guessing here, I don’t know anything, but in some ways, it can be unhelpful, because if they pander to this fan group, then how are you going to pander to every other fan group, do you know what I mean?"
Lawless made the final conclusion that "[she] became political and [she] had nothing to do with the discussion."
No Lucy Lawless... For Now
All of the explanations that Lawless gives sound realistic, and it's a shame if those fan castings unintentionally had those effects on her—especially if she lost a role in another project because of it.
While rumors have been swirling recently that Lucasfilm may have changed its mind on recasting Cara Dune, it's probably safe to assume the character is gone. There's even a rumored replacement for her character in Dune's former spin-off show, with Gina Carano's original spot being filled by the character of Hera Syndulla.
Fans will have to wait to see how it all pans out when The Mandalorian returns for its third season next year. Until then, they'll have the Book of Boba Fett to bite into in a few months—which is bound to impress viewers.
