Warner Bros. is deep into the development process for a massive new slate of projects coming over the next couple of years, which started in Summer 2021 with James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad.

Gunn unleashed his full vision for the DCEU’s worst heroes with gory violence and colorful storytelling throughout; he even had free reign to kill off nearly the entire team, save for a select few. By the end, fans also got the shocking reveal of two survivals for Sean Gunn’s Weasel and John Cena’s Peacemaker.

Cena’s story sets him up directly for the upcoming solo Peacemaker series on HBO Max, where he will again work with Gunn as the filmmaker executive produces and directs the show. With an all-star cast and an open slate for the plot, Cena will have the opportunity to bring more unmitigated chaos in the DCEU’s first expansion into streaming projects.

With the series set to begin streaming on HBO Max in just over three months, the service gave fans the very first peek into the thrilling adventure at a recent Hollywood blockbuster event.

You CAN See John Cena's Peacemaker!

During the 2021 Primetime Emmy Awards show, HBO Max released a promotional montage for its upcoming new shows and movies. Included in the footage was the first look at John Cena's Peacemaker, which is set to premiere on HBO Max in January 2022.

The six seconds of footage featured Cena's anti-hero getting out of a car in full costume for a sit-down dinner with other key cast members. The car even boasts a license plate that reads "PSS-MKR," showing off the character's classically huge ego.

Peacemaker then sat down at an undisclosed family restaurant while speaking with Jennifer Holland's Emilia Harcourt. Also sitting near Danielle Brooks' Leota Adebayo and Steve Agee's John Economos, Harcourt laments about Peacemaker's clothing choice as she exclaims "Why are you in your costume?":

Not even bothering to answer the question directly, Cena's anti-hero looks at her with a straight face and corrects her by saying "This is a uniform.":

This was followed by a few quick action shots of Cena's Christopher Smith at target practice, shooting guns at a hunk of metal to form a bullet-indented peace sign:

John Cena's Peacemaker has a lot riding on its shoulders; not only is it set to serve as something of a direct sequel to The Suicide Squad, but it will also bring the DCEU's first expansion into the streaming world after Marvel Studios saw huge success with their similar venture in 2021.

While this ad only showed a few seconds of footage, the hype is already building to see Cena's supremely confident anti-hero return to action after his near-death experience in The Suicide Squad. He appears to have recovered quite well from his injuries, and it seems clear that he was ready to get back into his uniform as soon as humanly possible.

That confidence and bravado will surely serve Christopher Smith well regardless of what his next mission holds, with the footage showing his superhuman expertise with a gun in full force. Alongside anticipated supporting players like Holland, Brooks, and Freddie Stroma's Vigilante, the show will provide new challenges for Peacemaker after a tumultuous run alongside the Suicide Squad.

With Cena further cementing his status as a Hollywood megastar, Peacemaker will give him the chance to expand mightily on a fan-favorite character from James Gunn's debut DCEU directorial effort. Even without signs pointing to what the story will hold, hype is building quickly to see how Warner Bros. will give Peacemaker a run in the spotlight as a solo star.

Peacemaker comes to HBO Max in January 2022.
