Robert Pattinson's The Batman Spinoff Show Being Developed for Penguin Villain
While the story of Bruce Wayne's Batman has been told various times on film, it's never quite the same story twice.
That tradition looks to continue in 2022 with the highly-anticipated The Batman.
Directed by Matt Reeves and starring Robert Pattinson, this Batman film focuses on a younger Bruce Wayne early in his run as Gotham City's Caped Crusader.
The Batman also stars Jeffrey Wright as Commissioner Gordon, Andy Serkis as Alfred Pennyworth, and Colin Farrel as Batman's notorious antagonist - the Penguin.
Even though the film isn't set to release until March of 2022, Warner Bros. has already greenlit a spin-off drama set within the Gotham Police Department for HBO Max; and now, another series based on Reeves' film has been added to the line-up.
Batman Spin-Off Starring the Penguin For HBO Max
According to Variety, a spin-off series focusing on the Penguin from Matt Reeves' The Batman is in the works for HBO Max.
The spin-off looks to explore Oswald Cobblepot's rise to power as the Penguin in Gotham City.
Colin Farrell, who plays the well-known villain in the film, has reportedly been approached to star in the HBO Max series in which Matt Reeves and the film's producer, Dylan Clark, are serving as executive producers.
Farrell isn't the first to portray the iconic Batman villain, but rather joins the ranks of Danny DeVito, Burgess Meredith, and Robin Lord Taylor. However, he would be the first to play the Penguin in his own series.
Farrell's Return As The Penguin Seems Likely
Another confirmed spin-off series shows that the studio has faith in Reeves' film and feels there are more stories to tell based on the director's take on this world and its cast of characters.
Even though there's no word on whether Farrell will continue portraying the character in the series at this time, it's unlikely that Warner Bros. would move forward with the show without Farrell's involvement.
The current lack of a deal doesn't mean Farrell and the studio aren't in talks over the project. Also, since there's no projected release date being reported at this time, fans may not hear of an actual deal until after The Batman debuts next year.
The Batman is currently slated for a March 4, 2022 release.
