Marvel Boss Speaks on Avoiding 'Overabundance' of Disney+ MCU Shows

Hawkeye Disney+

On November 24, 2021, two episodes of Marvel Studios' newest series Hawkeye will arrive on Disney+ just in time for the holidays.

Starring Jeremy Renner and Hailee Steinfeld, this Christmas-themed series takes place in New York City where Renner's Clint Barton, and his new partner Kate Bishop, must confront a new threat in time for Clint to be home for Christmas.

Speaking of Christmas, Marvel fans must've been very good this year, considering Hawkeye is the fifth MCU series audiences have received in 2021 alone. Fortunately, that trend looks to continue as, just like the fans, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige says he's "not anywhere near bored yet"!

Marvel's Kevin Feige Talks MCU Disney+ Lineup

During a Hawkeye virtual press conference, Kevin Feige was asked to reflect on the MCU's first year on Disney+, to which he answered saying, "The reception to each of them has been the most gratifying:"

"It's about Year Three or Four for us as we've been developing them. We learn on everything. The reception to each of them is what has been most gratifying. We wanted them to be different. We're sitting here talking about a fun, grounded, action Christmas series. Loki is this very otherworldly thing, Falcon and Winter Soldier geopolitical, WandaVision an ode to sitcoms and grief."

While it's true that every Disney+ series Marvel Studios offered in 2021 was different and distinct from the last, playing with different genres is nothing new for the studio.

While the Hollywood Elite are often quick to criticize comic book films, Marvel films aren't so easily categorized. After all, the first two Thor films were rooted in Shakespeare and mythology; Ant-Man was a heist film, Captain America: The Winter Soldier was a political thriller, and both Infinity War and Endgame had elements of war films.

Noting that the uniqueness of each 2021 Disney+ show prevented the impression of an "overabundance" of content, Kevin Feige continued, saying,

"It feels like the audience has responded the way we wanted them to. It doesn't seem like an overabundance of it. I've always said no one will ever get bored before we at Marvel Studios will of these projects. Going twenty-plus years, I'm not anywhere near bored yet because we're allowed to do within the sub-genre so many different types of things with amazing casts like. Some have seen the first two episodes, and I'm very excited for them to see the rest."

The Secret to Marvel's Disney+ Success

Even with five Disney+ series plus three theatrical films to date in 2021, Marvel fans are as eager as ever for what the studio has coming next as the hype for Spider-Man: No Way Home and the MCU's 2022 slate has shown.

In fact, much of the buzz for Marvel's upcoming projects has to do with the studio exploring new genres and sub-genres.

For instance, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness looks to explore horror, while She-Hulk on Disney+ will be the studio's first legal comedy, and the newly announced Marvel's Zombies will bring post-apocalyptic, disaster elements into the MCU.

If anything about Marvel is formulaic, it's Feige and the studio's willingness to take risks and show their characters and stories for all types of films; and just like Feige, fans are nowhere near bored yet.

The first two episodes of Hawkeye drop on Disney+ on November 24, 2021.
