Guardians of the Galaxy Director Hints His Upcoming DC Spin-offs

James Gunn, Suicide Squad

After a short-lived firing from Marvel Studios' Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, which finally entered production recently, James Gunn signed on to make the jump to DC for The Suicide Squad, a soft-reboot of David Ayer's 2016 flick. Before the R-Rated blockbuster even hit theaters, the director was already hard at work on a spin-off series for HBO Max starring John Cena's Peacemaker on a mission to save the world.

Following the Peacemaker's near-death experience at the hands of Bloodsport in The Suicide Squad, John Cena will be returning alongside ARGUS agents John Economos and Emilia Harcourt. The series will also see the debut of several new characters, including DC hero Vigilante played by Freddie Stroma.

With only a month to go until The Suicide Squad's first spin-off hits HBO Max, James Gunn has teased there may be more on the way.

James Gunn Teases More Suicide Squad Spin-Offs

Peacemaker director James Gunn recently teased more The Suicide Squad spin-off projects are on the way with a recent reply to a fan on Twitter.

When asked if more spin-offs will be coming after Peacemaker, Gunn simply replied with a winking face emoji and a GIF of a raccoon mischievous raccoon, cryptically captioned "he, he, he, he, he, he, he":

Which Villain Will Get the Next Spin-Off?

After taking the reins on The Suicide Squad, James Gunn was quick to dive into another project for DC with the Peacemaker spin-off series for HBO Max. Even after two trailers, much of the series' plot remains shrouded in mystery, but the director has previously shared his desire to return for a second season.

With Gunn hard at work on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 while looking ahead to Peacemaker Season 2 and likely a sequel to The Suicide Squad, it's hard to imagine him taking up directing duties on any more spin-offs. Perhaps Gunn may step back from such a prominent directing role next time around in favor of producer credit.

In terms of which characters could be next-in-line for a spin-off project, one obvious option would be Idris Elba's Bloodsport. However, James Gunn previously shut down rumors of a solo project for the fan-favorite marksman, so unless something has changed since, that seems to be off the table for now.

Looking at which characters are still breathing after The Suicide Squad, that only leaves Harley Quinn, Weasel, King Shark, and Ratcatcher 2. With the two animalistic CGI villains being rather expensive options for a solo project, Harley Quinn or Ratcatcher 2 are by far the most viable options.

Both female villain-turned-heroes have proven to be fan-favorites in recent months and years, making them by far the obvious choices to lead a spin-off. Of course, a prequel series or film centered around a deceased character is entirely possible, but a sequel of some kind seems far more likely.

The Suicide Squad is out now in stores and on digital services. Peacemaker will be streaming from January 13, 2022, exclusively on HBO Max.
