Sony Responds to Andrew Garfield’s Amazing Spider-Man 3 Campaign In New Post
Spider-Man: No Way Home has left theaters, but chatter about the blockbuster franchise has yet to slow down. Tom Holland's web-slinging threequel united three generations of Peter Parker, debuted Charlie Cox's Matt Murdock into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and caused a Multiversal fever whose only prescription comes from the good doctor.
With the aforementioned alternate reality chaos culminating in May 2022's Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and Daredevil's next MCU steps seemingly set, the future of the trio of Spider-Men remains vague.
Holland is expected to continue his iteration of Peter Parker in a new college-age trilogy, while Tobey Maguire could return as soon as Doctor Strange 2. That leaves Andrew Garfield, who has had no shortage of fan demand.
Since Garfield's return to the character in December, chatter about a potential The Amazing Spider-Man 3 has been astronomical. The fan campaign for #MakeTASM3 has real estate on Twitter's trending page and has received Holland's "full support" stamp of approval.
Garfield has admitted he has "no plans" to return to the role again, but admitted his deception during No Way Home's marketing campaign will make "everyone call [him] a liar for the rest of [his] life." Even if Garfield is telling the truth, both him and Sony Pictures are aware of the #MakeTASM3 movement.
Sony Addresses #MakeTASM3
"We have plans for you, Peter Parker."
Mr. Fiers' proclamation about Spider-Man's future in 2014's The Amazing Spider-Man 2 never amounted to anything at the time, but the demand for more of Andrew Garfield's Peter Parker has undergone a renaissance in recent months. While Sony Pictures has yet to outright comment on the #MakeTASM3 movement, their social media team has acknowledged the campaign.
In a tweet accompanying the recent "The Amazing Peter #3" trailer for Spider-Man: No Way Home's digital release, Sony's social team noted that they have "seen the hashtag" but the decision is out of their hands.
"The Amazing Peter #3!
(Note: Yes, we’ve seen the hashtag. No, we don’t decide which movies get made. We’re just the social team)."
What's Next for Garfield's Spider-Man?
While not every fan campaign works out, comic book movies have seen success in recent social media movements. The infamous #ReleaseTheSnyderCut campaign ran for nearly three years before director Zack Snyder confirmed that HBO Max would stream a four-hour version of 2017's Justice League, remade in his vision.
Unlike Zack Snyder's Justice League; however, The Amazing Spider-Man 3 does not exist, which comes with both pros and cons.
The bad news is this movie needs all three stages of production. Snyder's unfinished cut of Justice League always existed - it was just a matter of polishing CGI and editing scenes together.
That said, Sony has much more to gain from The Amazing Spider-Man 3 than Warner Bros. had with Zack Snyder's Justice League. The first two Amazing Spider-Man films generated over $700 million at the worldwide box office, and demand for the web-slinger has only increased since.
Even as Garfield's future remains uncertain, Sony is very much aware of the revenue potential from a third Amazing Spider-Man film.
For now, Andrew Garfield can be seen in Spider-Man: No Way Home, available on Blu-ray and 4K UHD on April 12.
