Hawkeye Disney+: Hailee Steinfeld Reveals How She's Catching Up on Marvel Characters
Movie star, model, and singer/songwriter Hailee Steinfield is set to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe later this year. She will be joined by MCU veteran Jeremy Renner when she debuts as Kate Bishop in Disney+'s Hawkeye.
This series is set to be one of six premieres on Disney's streaming service this year and will continue to welcome new Marvel heroes. This Phase 4 project will likely portray a passing of the torch as Hawkeye goes from Clint Barton to Kate Bishop.
A previously released image of Renner in a comic book accurate purple Hawkeye suit got fans excited to see the iconic look. Newcomer to the MCU, Echo is also rumored to be debuting in the series. For Marvel fans that enjoyed the Hawkeye comics series featuring Kate Bishop, there's now even more excitement for a comic-inspired story.
HAILEE STEINFELD HAS READ HAWKEYE COMICS
In the May 2021 issue of SFX Magazine, via Twitter, Hailee Steinfeld confirmed she has been reading comics to catch up on the previous history of Marvel characters. Steinfeld admitted that she's "always loved comics" being a "very visual person," adding that she's been "discovering these elements of Kate Bishop that are in [the comics] that we're bringing to life in the show, and other elements of the comics."
Steinfeld also talked about how she loves joining a universe that already exists because of its "endless amounts of references and information." She also said "it's always exciting to see what the filmmakers choose to take from what we know and turn it into what it becomes."
A COMIC-ACCURATE KATE BISHOP
Marvel Studios has been historically known for not following the comics exactly as they were already told. The MCU picks and chooses certain runs or arcs that fit in well to their universe. One clear example was using the name Civil War, pitting Iron Man and Captain America against each other, but for totally different reasons.
Hawkeye is sure to continue the trend of paying respect to the comics but not being a carbon copy of them. Anyone interested in seeing comics brought to life should watch anime shows based on previously released manga, where most series tell the exact same story as the one on the page.
As for Hawkeye, lookout for more of the Ronin storyline being played out with the addition of Echo. Another story the MCU show could pull from is Clint and Kate's battle against the mafia. The show could also further develop a possible West Coast Avengers or Young Avengers team, both thins that have already been teased in Phase Four.
Hawkeye has wrapped filming and will begin on Disney+ starting in late 2021.
