Eternals Writer Says Josh Brolin's Thanos Would Need Role In Sequels (Exclusive)
Warning - This article contains spoilers from Eternals.
The entire Infinity Saga is founded on one villain: Thanos. He was the threat lurking in the shadows for years, that chill Tony Stark kept feeling down his spine.
When the character was finally properly introduced in Avengers: Infinity War, it was glorious for many fans. Brought to life by Josh Brolin, the villain has hit Darth Vader status in pop culture—people across the world know his name, face, and voice.
So, when he met his end in Avengers: Endgame (twice), it was a little bittersweet. Many didn’t want Brolin’s time in the MCU to come to an end.
Those who have seen the newly released Marvel Studios film Eternals got a welcome surprise when, during the post-credits scene, Eros was introduced—none other than the brother of the Mad Titan.
Is it safe for fans to hope for more Thanos down the road?
Is More Thanos on the Way?
Speaking in an exclusive interview with The Direct, Eternals screenplay writers Ryan and Kaz Firpo discussed the inclusion of Eros.
During a conversation regarding the implications of Eros and Thanos either being synthetic or organic beings, one thing became clear: Thanos seems to factor heavily into any possible storyline with Eros down the line.
So what do the Firpo cousins think about the possibility of seeing Josh Brolin’s Thanos down the line again?
Kaz seemed to think so, with the writer stating that he thinks that there is “no way” to develop Eternals sequels without Josh Brolin's Thanos being involved in some capacity:
“I believe that there is no way that you can do Eternals 2 and 3 without somehow touching on Mr. Brolin.”
Thanos, Eros, & a Mysterious History
It's hard to see a future with Harry Styles in the MCU that doesn't involve a scene or two, at the very least, with his deranged brother, Josh Brolin. One doesn't just go and introduce Eros, the kin of Thanos, without actually giving them any story content for the future.
This could end up being entirely in the form of flashbacks. These sequences could unveil the tragic history of the planet Titan, how Thanos came to be, and what led Eros to where he is now—not to mention simply provide more mythos to the Eternals and their species.
Another possibility? Maybe Thanos will come back from the dead. After all, if he is an Eternal, there's plenty of room for Marvel Studios to work with in order to get Brolin back into the MCU as a key player.
Eternals is now playing in theaters worldwide.
